Not a fan of the built in sun visor find they distort- but had dark / mirrored for years with not issue - and for what it’s worth the instrument the police use to measure light coming through will only work on flat glass - so they can officially only advise you anyway. If used at night you deserve what u get
Get a helmet with an integrated one. You cant see shit at night with a regular tinted visor. Its nice to be able to flip it into use as wanted
i've got a pair of clear oakley goggles to wear after dark, but then i do have an enduro style helmet
Arai pro shade system gives the versatility of a dark visor and clear visor without the additional weight of an integrated visor system. I had the Schuberth integrated, excellent quiet helmet but bloody heavy and made my neck ach on long rides. The Arai is much lighter (not at all quiet thought, need ear plugs) but I love the visor system. At night time or going through tunnels just simply flip up, clear visor instantly. Understand it’s quite an investment me talking about helmets and visor systems, your discussing visors, but this is my experience. Excellent day or night compromise IMHO
Pete's suggestion of one of those built in drop down tinted pilot type extra visor is a good one but with one caveat, make sure you actually try one on and operate the drop down visor particularly if you wear glasses as some of them are built so close to your glasses that they cause fit issues
Don't get me wrong, I love arai , and was arai through and through but that external shield looks a bit Heath Robinson to my eyes, hence I switched to the Shoei GT air. Why don't arai makes a lid with an internal flip down? So many companies do them now, and still make light weight lids without compromising shell strength so why can't they?
The Shoei GT is a lovely piece of kit, but to be honest I got a great deal on the Arai with the pro shade and pin lock system all logoed with my favourite bike brand But Heath Robinson or not it works excellent, and deffo light weight compared to others.
So Saxo chav pulls out in front of you and a 1000 to one shot, he actually has insurance. If he/they spot your visor they are going to use it against you. Go with an internal visor
I had a GT air, very good lid, not heavy at all, very quiet and comfortable, with the internal flip down. Well worth buying
Hmm - not had an issue. From day one (30 years ago now) ive ridden with a "Black" visor. So much so that i will only go for a lid that has a "Black" visor available. Currently have a Shoei xspirit 3 and i did have on that a PhotoChromic visor (very expensive) so it acts like a pair of sunglasses and darkens in the light. When it was black it didnt really get black enough for me so sold it. Ive just gone with the normal not for road use black visor and very happy. With regards to the plod i think personally (to our [Bikers] advantage) theyve gotten lazy and rely on cameras and ANPR to do their work for them. Last year i was on my way home from work, went through town to fowlers (Bristol) and a the front of the traffic i pulled up beside an unmarked traffic car with two uniformed coppers. I looked in through the window (simpson indy car helmet on....with a "Simpson" sticker all the way across the top of the visor and a really black visor...simpson being the blackest that i know of. They just smiled and admired the bike - complete with 9x3 strip plate....
Had dark visors all my riding life and never an issue. My last lid was an AGV with the internal visor. It was useless as the main visor has pinlock but there’s nothing stopping the internal visor misting more than a car in a dogging zone. Also, I had to buy an illegal internal visor anyway as the legal one was bloody useless at keeping out glare. I’m now back in a normal lid with a dark visor and won’t go internal again.
And.... Dark visors are cool !!! I agree on all points, but the internal ones (if they're good ones) are really handy. Whenever we go to Europe and there are a lot of tunnels, the flip up and down dark ones are handy, and the Shoei one is excellent imo. A few years back, I went down to Exeter to see a bike, and got chatting to the guy etc etc, anyway, long story short, left his place a bit late with my black Arai + very black visor. With 80 odd miles still to go, the sun went down a bit quicker than I anticipated (Doh!!) and I ended up doing the last hour with my visor open cause I could see feck all. I did'nt crash or anything, but the last hour back to mine, did end with several large summer bugs smashing in to my face. Oh I would have liked my GT air then !! But again, dark visors are indeed cool
Did that last Sunday. Left Suffolk late and had to get back to East Sussex. Did about 50 miles with the visor open before we stopped at services and I swapped lids with the wife.
I always use dark tint on my rx7 and have done so for decades. No issues. Takes seconds to swap to a clear one. If Im gonna be out late, I just take it with me. Theyre easy to put under jacket with it sitting snuggly around side just above hips (I have an aria visor 'bag' thing). Unless youre a fattie. Getting caught out once is enough to remind you as dry red eye is almost as bad as arc eye. I dont like the secondary visor arai do personally as its only 50%, plus flip up would act like an air brake. I only wear Arai's.
Its never the fact that it gets dark. Its the bugs.....get so many splashed across the visor as soon as you wipe them off....thats it - looks like its just been buttered...
Ahh yes, wish I had that luxury, but my lass has a head thats no bigger than a peanut, so you can imagine how big her brain is !!
