Responsible Riding

  1. couldn't agree more R, for me there's a ratio in a posted delivery that is sometimes hard to determine - is the message mainly delivered in a sincere manner with genuine caring about the readers future actions? or does the content consist more of smugness, 'jumping to conclusion' about the reader, patronage? (and I don't mean favouritism). When the latter happens face to face (so with several additional clues to a 'written word' communication) with someone who you thought knew you by now, then it does tend to piss me off these days..

  2. One thing I have found useful is to watch the spokes or wheel details on a stationary car as it’s ready to move. It’s an easy giveaway as to what going to happen next.

  3. Plus the direction of the wheels. If they are pointing across your path, take extra care. If they are pointing straight ahead, you get a little more slack. Better than eye contact because they look you in the eye for 15 seconds and then still pull out on you!

  4. Well I appreciated the pulling out ‘cause I’m not on contraception. I didn’t appreciate the prolonged eye contact though.

  5. No wheelies. No stoppies. And riding 15 minutes out of 60. (Out laps and in laps don’t count as riding)

    Vs

7hrs of hooping around tight ,technical roads the big, fast sweeping roads in mid and s wales.

    Tough choice ;)

  6. While ive not been on a trackday id have to agree with Bradders....thats why we go to the TT every year as its the above, with no speed limits either...!

  7. Isn't it the strangest thing!

People are staring at you from their car window in a side street. You are on your bike, (or in car) have the right of way and at the last minute they pull out. You are able to stop or swerve at the last second and avoid them. Both vechicles are sometimes now stopped. They look at you either frightened, angry or totally confused. WTF - they can't all suffer from short term memory loss so they must remember they just pulled out of a side road and nearly caused an accident?

  8. Sometimes I wonder if they take eye contact as ‘go ahead’ as, roles reversed and pulling out of a busy junction, you often do that to ‘convince’ someone to let you out.

  9. I was leading a ride out yesterday of about eight bikes and sometimes the group wasn't as close together as I'd have liked. Passed a few motorist in side roads on my left hand side looking to pull out after I'd passed. With more bikes following me, probably at some speed, I found asking them to stop and wait with a politely raised hand in passing made them hold back until the other bikes had gone by.
I guess it's unusual for a rider to interact directly like that so if it only makes them pause to think, eh, what's up, that buys enough time to pass safely.

  10. Riding on the road V TD is like being 16 and that girl will let you get stinky fingers but not go balls deep.

  11. @Exige? Over to you.

  12. Tell me some good roadside in Wales. I did the A466 I think it Ian to Monmouth and stopped at tintern on the way back for coffee and cake. Was lovely except for my CNC racing rear wheel slider coming off half way through. A screw had sheared off. Could have taken someone or behind me.

  13. I sometimes thank people not for pulling out on me!

  14. A bit of courtesy goes a long way. Disgruntled drivers take less care and make mistakes, happy drivers tend to be more attentive of other people. You're maybe doing the next guy a favour when you thank someone for being careful.

Unless the happy driver is a women who's merrily gossiping with her passenger and has completely forgotten she's driving a car.

  15. Yeah, but as Jimmy says, all the roads on the continent let you go balls deep and they take it up the arse......:D:upyeah:
