Hello everyone, I've had my first “bike drop” and it was painful. The bike fell on its left side and the gear pedal got bent, as well as the bolt used to attach it to the LH rearset. Yesterday I was checking the thread into which the gear pedal bolt engages and it looks as if the initial part of the thread had been damaged. It looks like the initial part of the thread was "flattened", maybe due to the impact? Which would explain why the bolt was bent too. Not sure if the thread is meant to be like that or if it's been damaged and I need to re-tap it. The bolt engages OK, although I must say there’s excessive “free-play” on it until it gets fully tightened. I’ve attached a couple of photos hoping someone could help me on this (ideally by taking some pictures of the thread on their bike for comparison). It’s a Ducati Hypermotard 821 - 2013. I can upload more photos if needed. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Javier
i dropped mine too, bent the gear lever and the pivot bolt, so when its been screwed in and out, its stripped some of the threads. for now i have loctited the bolt in until I either get a tap to clean the threads or as suggested above, helicoil... might be a good time to look for a nice set of rearsets? really dont like the standard arrangement for the footpeg hangers
Same story here. Out of curiosity, did you damage anything else? My LH handguard shattered, LH mirror snapped and the fairing has some light scratches Regarding the bent gear lever and bolt, I've straightened both (applying heat and some force). I've ordered new ones anyway, so I guess I'll keep them for any future fuck-ups (hopefully there won't be any). As for the threaded hole, I ran a tap through it yesterday and it seems to have improved the condition. It's still not ideal, but the bolt secures itself in the thread, so I'll just mount the new parts with some Loctite and that should do it! I don't particularly like the idea of drilling the bike... Had a look at some nice rearsets but I cant really justify such an expense for a partly damaged thread. Need to save up for an exhaust
yeah, handguards appear to made out of glass, 1st drop i managed to get away with a duct tape repair, 2nd drop not so much, had to shell out for a new one, but at least the indicators work again.. i have some oberon mini mirrors mounted in board of the levers so no damage there. i straightened the gear lever as much as a dared, didnt have a heat gun, but in end fitted a £20 special from ebay (its crap by the way). the loctite fix seems to be holding everything together quite nicely for now, will leave it alone until something forces me to tinker again... agreed, on the rearsets, look great..but jeez, cant justify the cost
It's shocking how fragile the OEM handguards are. Was seriously considering getting the DP handguards, but they cost a fortune. Still need to think about it. Thought about getting mirrors that don't protrude anymore than the end of the handlebar to prevent future snaps, might give them a try. I also considered them cheap gear levers from eBay. Glad I didn't go for it now. Why do you not like it?
this is the lever i bought...found it really hard to adjust in to the right position, but maybe the worst thing was the bolts wouldnt stay tight without loctite and i had to sand off the anodising on the mating surfaces between the lever and pivot arm and apply loctite to those surfaces as well, all to stop the lever moving position. its all setup now, but was a bit a faff, suppose it was only 20 quid this is my mirror setup, its not a panoramic view behind but better than you'd think
Yeah I guess can't really ask for a lot for £20. Though tbf, it fitted ok and it's working fine now so I like that mirror set-up! Very tidy. Where did you get them from? Also, do they not get in the way / moved out of position? Seems they'd be quite close to your hands/arms during normal use of clutch, accelerator, brake, indicators, etc.
not sure if i'm allowed post links here but.... http://www.oberon-performance.co.uk/acatalog/Oberon_Mirrors.html the mirrors are great, better than the standard setup because you are looking under your arms, dont see your elbows, arms or anything...if you have a big jacket with the pockets stuffed that might get in the way. i do find i have to move my head a bit to see everything behind, but i find them great on the m-ways and dual carridge ways for blind spot checking. took a bit of getting used to since you have to look down rather than up to see in the mirrors and it does take a conscious effort to look and make sure you do a proper mirror check, but you get used to it...wouldnt go back to standard mirrors. bit of frating about to get them fitted but the dont foul on any levers, would like it if the arms on the mirrors were just slightly longer but, like i say, you get used to it Dave
ok, the loctite didnt work and my "fix" doesnt seem to be holding up...been out and bought a helicoil...will update with pics...
Thanks for sharing details about the mirrors, might give them a try! That set-up looks better than OEM. I received the new gear pedal yesterday. Tried fitting it and when tightening it (23 Nm) the remaining part of the thread that was OK collapsed... . Was so gutted, wanted to get back on the bike for bank holiday weekend. I'll go with the Helicoil insert fix too. Let us know how your fix goes Dave. For anyone that's used Helicoil inserts before, will they still work fine in a through hole such as this one?
All done, bolt tightens up good and proper now... Hyper95...where in the country are you? i'll be driving down through mid wales to cardiff (from lake district) tomorrow... if i'm passing any where close by, i'm happy to lend you the M8 kit, let me know
That looks sturdy! I'm in Newcastle Dave, so don't think it's anywhere near your trip unfortunately. Thank you for offering though. Guess I'll have to wait til I get a Helicoil kit. Is the bolt that holds the gear lever an M8×1.25? Not sure about the threads pitch.
DOH, shame, I was in the north east today too! I bought a kit from machine mart, the M8 1.25 is the one, works perfectly, feels solid The kit has everything you need, drill, tap, coil threader, maybe the only thing missing was a tap handle, but I got away with a 9mm ring spanner. Hope you get it sorted
Ah that was unlucky! Hopefully I''ll get all I need by tomorrow. Thank you for all the info Dave. Glad to know it worked out good for you mate!
I dont know if this helps, but i managed to repair a bent gear changer (and brake pedal) on my Hypermotard by buying one of these from eBay and drilling the bent end off to attach it: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Grey-Universa-CNC-Motorcycle-Rearset-Footrests-Footpeg-Foot-Pegs-Pedal-Aluminum/302508829673?_trkparms=aid=555018&algo=PL.SIM&ao=2&asc=49131&meid=cc6360cd29c24ac59341b74afec9bbeb&pid=100005&rk=1&rkt=11&sd=302511433306&itm=302508829673&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851 I had done the same with the brake foot lever previously, so had this in the garage and unfortunately needed it after an attempted theft of my bike last week left it on the floor with a damaged gear lever and other damage that I am also now trying to fix. See attached pictures of the fixed brake lever I had parked the bike in Liverpool on my way to the Isle of Man TT this week and some jokers tried to drag the bike in to a van and then dropped it! I am hoping i can repair most using eBay as dont want to lose my no claims..
