1199 Anyone Had This Before?

  1. Was supposed to have a blast out with some other forum members today and male our way down to the Italian Bike Festival at east kirkby...

Without boring you all with the finer details of our eventful morning, the bike started and run fine first thing to our meeting point. Filled up with Super Unleaded at Tesco Petrol station and started the bike to pull it over to the side, again it started and run fine...

Fast forward half an hour when we were making our way out of the town, the bike dropped down to one cylinder and intermittently fired up on the second cylinder again for around a mile to the next available layby where I could pull over again. Switched the bike off and let it stand for 5 minutes and then restarted, again only running on one cylinder...

Obviously couldn't continue with the ride out on it so had to admit defeat and limp the bike home again. On the way home (approx 7 miles) the bike intermittently came back on to two cylinders for a short while before reverting back to just one again... When running on two cylinder, the bike would pick up OK through the revs but then bog back down again under load and occasionally backfire.

When filling up at tesco, I also filled Mrs M's monster from the same pump and that ran fine all day... As did everyone else's bike which filled up there, so I guess that rules out a bad batch of fuel.

There was also no Engine Management Light on the dash so nothing detected by the ECU?? Last month it had a new MAF sensor fitted at Italia so unless they have two, I guess that rules this out also...

I'll be giving Italia Moto a bell first thing in the morning to see what they have to say but thought it would be worth asking if anyone else has any experience of this and if it's something obvious and easily fixed.

Thanks in advance for any assistance and advice :upyeah:

  2. There are 2 MAP sensors and when one went on the Diavel, I was advised to change both. Hope you get it sorted. Andy

  3. Could it be the regulator/rectifier giving up?

  4. Could be Ricky

With it not throwing any EML, I'm sure it'll not be anything serious and a simple fix. The last MAF sensor threw up a 'Big Red' Check Engine warning on the dash but nothing this time. There were about 10 of us this morning and we were all scratching our heads lile monkeys at the side of the road whilst the reliable Jap Crap and Lambretta's passed us laughing at my poorly Pani :sob:

Is there a way to check the Reg/Rec myself @RickyX

  5. Ignition coil failing?

  6. Either on the dash or with a multimeter across the battery terminals, measure the output at around 2000rpm. It should be around 14.4V.

  7. It was the rear cylinder not firing btw...

  8. same thing happened to my 1299S, got worse in the wet. Even now in the dry its a struggle to pull away, bikes going back to dealer to sort out under warranty.

  9. it could be as simple as a duff plug. I would always change the plugs even if they look good before delving further

  10. Was going to ask you which you thought wasn't firing when we met up again but never got chance for obvious reasons... Cheers for confirming Stu, I'll get it sorted one way or another.

Glad you got back OK and hope you get the Radiator sorted OK mate :upyeah:

  11. If it was reb/rec the battery would get flat and not start ime. You seem to have ruled fuel out. So I’d start with swapping plugs and see what that does. If it was a coil you’d get a mil light I would have thought.

  12. I had coils go in my early Pani but that shorted the circuit and kept blowing the fuse. Maybe one is on its way like you say?

  13. Just a quick update on this... The bike is back home and running sweet as a nut!

The prognosis: Contaminated fuel... Italia Moto opened up the filler cap first off and the fuel absolutely stunk! Tank drained and fuel system flushed through with fresh fuel, 10L of fresh fuel put in and the bike fired up and ticked over lovely. Whipped the rear cylinder (the one that went down) plug out and it wasn't pretty black. New one fitted as a precaution and bike returned to me.

I mentioned that I filled Mrs M's monster straight afterwards out of the same nozzle and that ran just fine which resulted in me initially ruling out the fuel. The fuel also smelt fine when I checked gave it a cursory smell later the afternoon it all went tits up.

Anyway, Italia put down Mrs M's Monste being OK with the fuel down to ut being fairly basic in the fuel system and electronics side in comparison to the Panigale.

When they checked the fuel in the workshop they tell me it didn't evaporate off the finger like you would expect Super Unleaded to and left an almost diesel like residue in the finger...

Last time I'll be tanking the bikes up at Tesco's.

@bettes @El Toro @Exige @higgy748 and whoever else fuelled at Tesco that day... FYI.

    Ben.

  14. i just use standard unleaded. i have used the super stuff but never noticed a difference
i would hazard a guess a tank of that at Tesco stays there a lot longer than the other stuff and could be quite stale after a while

  15. I used the Super Unleaded pump and it broke my radiator

Didn't seem to interrupt the fuelling of the bike, but I did have half a tank which it mixed with...

  16. Funny you should mention you having half a tank for it to mix with Stu as Mrs M's Monster did too, where as the Pani was about to start running on fumes and took a full tank...

Wonder if that was the difference between the Panigale not liking it and everyone else who used it being OK? Never considered that until now.

Italia Moto are also going to write me a letter stating that the fuel was the root cause of the issue with the bike and suggested that I contact Tesco about it, apparently they have had a few of the 'newer bikes' objecting to sub standard fuel and had success in recovering some of the remedial works cost...

  18. KMH? :worried:

  19. As far as I’m aware mine is ok. I can’t remember how much I had in the tank when I filled up though.

  20. V power lads. V power. I see there's a few Yorkies in the group but fight your instincts and whack some V power in there.
