Seized Swingarm Bolt

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Jasey46, May 28, 2018.

  1. So...had to angle grind bolt today..frame off !! Engine still connected to swingarm !! Q. is how to get the rest of the bolt out ?? Obv. the easiest way pls !! have tried wd40 / rostex etc & also HUGE lump hammer !! Tia

  2. Heat and penetrating oil or cut between the swing arm and engine, be careful with the big hammer, it has been known to crack the casing. Heat around the swing arm bushes and tap it back and forth from both sides worked for me, I now remove it every year and grease.

  4. There doesn't look like enough room between swingarm & engine ...what would you use ?? It seems to still be seized chain side..:-(

  5. Mine was stuck on the chain side, I managed with heat on the swing arm bush and knocking back and forth.
Others have cut between the swing arm and engine with hacksaw blades or reciprocating saw.

  8. Welcome Dave

  9. WD40 is crap for this. Get Degrip or Plusgas.

  10. Plusgas, heat and patience

  11. Funny thing is i am only doing this because of x1 kick stand bolt has been botched so need to take engine to an engineer

  12. Sorry wrong photo ...hah ..:)

  13. When I rebuilt my 748 I couldn' t get the pivot bolt out. 2 weeks of spraying with penitrating fluid every nigh and trying again the next night and no amount of heat and smacking did it.
In the end I cut the swing arm to bits.. could get a blade in to cut bolt. Others may have managed but I couldn't do it .
Worst bit is I went to remove it a few months back to re-grease and avoid this again and it was stuck fast again .
Now I fear I have bent it or burred the end as it is about 50 mm out and won' move either way now.
I think I will get a drift made with the correct thread on the end and try again.
Failing that it will be out with the grinder again.
Not good as the bike is pretty now and it was pretty violent last time. .
    GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  16. To get swingarm/engine out of frame i had to grind bolt between frame/chainside of swingarm.. Then recip saw between engine/swingarm chainside...then pulled bolt through other side..sacrificed swingarm bolt and x1 spacer..
