1098 Opions ( I know, another 1098 thread )

  1. Yup, another 1098 thread

Looking at selling the 749s at the moment. A clean bog standard 1098 has surfaced and i was interested.

Im aware that there were misting / dampness issues from within the dashboard ( that can be remedied with some 3mm holes drilled into the rear ? ) but just curious from searching through threads here, are there any little gremlins a dealer / seller wont tell you about. From looking here on some old threads its seems only the 1098s with Ohlns forks goes through fork seals every now and again.

I will use it for fun of course, but i will also commute the odd time on it. Maybe in traffic a bit here and there too.

But it will also be a bike id take to Germany with luggage, prob the trusted kriega luggage ( if it can be fited ).

All info and repost slagging off would be greatful.

    Tks

    :upyeah:

  2. It's an awesome mile muncher for your intended purpose, the riding position is a bit on your wrists so keep the speed up and you'll be fine, fit a higher double bubble screen too for an easier tuck.
Commuting is OK if it's occasional, it's a waste of a good bike to play stop start and the riding position is a pain in slow traffic. Other drivers hear you coming so you'll be perfectly safe, if you have the full system and the full system is a must!
You might want a Sargent seat if doing long journeys frequently or a gel seat pad. There's a lot of custom bits out there them from bodywork, pegs, levers, screens & seats.

The tank range is a bit frustrating so either get the bigger tank or be prepared to stop every 100 to 110 miles. The luggage fits fine on the tail, the tank or your back, if placing on the tank or tail fit the pillion seat and something to stop your paintwork scratching, that anti-slip matting is great.

I have been to Germany, Czech, Poland, Italy and all countries between on a 1098, in the company of other 1098's all ran without issue other than an O2 sensor issue resulting in a hot rear cylinder on one bike. Rear tyre wear is something to watch if you use standard tyres, fit something a little harder and the whole continent is yours. Through Germany we had some periods where speeds were an indicated 150mph plus, but 100mph is comfortable.

Clutch adjustment issues and air in the system can be a pain so bleed it through before any long trip, check the rear brake whilst you're at it. Never had any noise issues, running full systems with open pipes, on three bikes that's some noise! Who got hassled for noise a 998FE with a flat battery in Czech republic! LOL

You'll love it, fine bike and a great engine, I miss mine and you can't say that about every bike I've ever had.

  3. Yes to all the above. In addition; the standard mirrors are next to useless (upgrade or fit extenders), the clutch lever can get heavy after a days riding (Oberon slave cyl works a treat) and the lights mist as well as the dash.

Only real issue I've had is the immobiliser cutting in and refusing to start after a wash. Store the manual code on your phone and avoid getting area around ignition barrel too wet.

And it really is 80-85 miles to fuel warning light and maybe 20 more before your nerves are shot.

  4. rubbish all of that, sorry.

  5. I once owned a 749s which i thought was a good bike just lacking power, now own 7 bikes and 3 of them being ducati, a 998s Final edition a 999s and a 1098s. For sure the power
is much better with the 1098s and a much more different riding position but what a bike to have fun with and the thing eats the miles and the fuel at an alarming rate. Saying that i sometimes which i never sold the 749s as it is still a great little sports bike to have fun with. BUY IT and wait for the sunshine.

  6. You win the 'helpful post of the day' award.

At least add a bit so we can discuss which bits are rubbish?

  7. i rode mine to belgium and back with kriega luggage after owning it for a week no problem

no other problems apart from there so expensive to run, not because of problems or anything bike related, its the necessity to buy bling.....

  8. OK rubbish bits, it comes covered in black plastic bits which you will spend a fortune replacing with carbon. The pirelli supercorsa tyres is comes with are great but don't last long
the standard exhaust needs changing to a termi ( more money ) the servicing is no cheaper than other ducati. Oh and the insurance man just loves you.

  9. sorry for hijack but Interesting tale unit, what is it ?

  10. Simples - buy one already blessed with carbon and termis, like I did. The dealer took care of the tyres and this time of year you can probably negotiate a "free" next service as part of the deal. Can't help with the insurance though.

But then you are buying close to the pinnacle of automotive performance and the whole "experience", so you've got to expect to pay a little for the privilege. Hence 1098's not "rubbish" but actually remarkable value right now for what you get. In my (biased) opinion of course.

  11. Ah, yes that! Quite a tale!
I can't remember, I bought it from a firm in Italy on tinternet. If I can find the details I'll publish them, I did do this on Ducatisti, but as we all know that's long gone......

Was easy to find your bike amongst others, it was the one with some bloke looking intently at the seat unit.

  12. My thoughts were the same, very nice tail unit. If you do remember please add it to this thread as i may try to find the same one . Looks very nice in the photo you posted.

  13. Hi folks.

Sorry, its been a while at this stage.

A 2007 1098 has came up for sale. Its belts have been done recently.

However it has 21k mls on the clock. :frown: Its not a lot of mls i know.

Is there any major service I need to now about. I am gonna talk to my local ducati tech guy tomrorow to see if he knows the bike ( give him the reg ) and go from there.

    cheers !!!

  14. Im fairly sure the Desmo service comes in increments of 7 or 8. So thats 7k or 8k, 14k or 16k, 21k or 24k etc

21k isnt that much of a problem if the price of the bike is right and its been looked after :upyeah:

  15. Great bike... was thinking of selling mine but I changed my mind and it's a keeper.
Agree with everything above plus I would strongly recommend fitting 14T front sprocket. Also if the clutch is too grabby it may be worth covering friction plates with some lithium grease - some say it makes a huge difference, in my case it helped a little bit.
Stock seat is useless - no grip at all so Ducati Performance one or Sargent is pretty much a must.

  16. How many extra miles does the bigger tank add before the next fuel stop?

  17. I want one of those tail units please help

    Regards Steve

  18. Check the top left corner of the radiator where the mounting bracket is welded on. It's a known weakness so ask the owner if it's been a problem.

As for everything else, as the previous posters have said, it's an amazing bike, bags of torque and with the full system, sounds like thunder!

I've done over 20k miles on mine now and haven't really had any serious issues other than what's been mentioned and the odd flat battery.

Wise words from Royum, it's very wristy and in traffic that can become quite uncomfortable. Get it moving though and the ergonomics suddenly make sense. However, riding through commuting traffic is fun (although a little uncomfortable), blipping the throttle as you do :upyeah:

  19. and spilling the coffee of those passing by

  20. Cock an ear for any mechanical grating/clanging from the l/h side when started.
    Sprag alert!
