1200 Pikes Peak Wind Noise

  1. Unfortunately this is called motorcycling. I have had over 30 different motorcycles. from small 250cc to 1400cc. It is called wind. Try a small screen , try a high screen . They all have a Characteristic about them The small ones usually give off the high pitched sound. The high ones give off a very low frequency thrum sound. There is no perfect answer. Well there is & it is called a car. As said above try a good set of ear plugs. Sorry but that is the definitive answer.

  2. Stops wind blowing under and into the helmet. Works for some.

  3. I know it sounds crazy but I shrink wrapped around the base of my helmet and round my neck. No joy!!

  4. Thanks for taking the time for replying but I just don’t think you have an understanding of the noise that is being generated. I too have ridden plenty of bikes over many years. This isn’t the first bike I’ve owned and have a problem because it’s not Audi quiet. If I carry on riding even with ear plugs in this will end up damaging my hearing long term. I like the bike and would prefer to find a workable solution hence posting on here.

  5. I’ve also taped over all the vents and around the visor

  6. Try it. Its cheap and takes no effort.

I have found the noise and buffeting generated when not wearing a neck buff is far greater due to the wind whistling past the neck and the base of the helmet.

I don't understand it but it does make a difference to me.

  7. Maybe you have superman hearing because while all of us complain about the noise and buffering it’s not that bad that we would consider selling?

Me I tried the touring screen that was worse

I bought PP screen fitted it and took it off without riding as I did not like look

So I cut down touring screen so wind hits below helmet

Still noisy but no buffeting and acceptable with earplug

Ducati Tour X or Shoei Neotech or Multitech no difference

  8. As above, tried most screens etc. One guy was complaining about same on here & he was using a peaked helmet which was making it worse. Helmets are a problem in themselves. I recently bought a shuberth flip helmet which are supposed to be the quietest flip available but it is still very noisy. Some say the clip on blade that fits at top of screen are good, not tried myself though.

  9. Peaked helmets are the noisiest, followed by flip fronts. If you want quaint as possible, it’s a full face item

  10. It makes no difference on peaked or full face. I have even taken the lining out of my daughters and wife’s agv full face helmets and they are just the same.

To be clear, I’m not getting any buffeting from the wind, my neck is relaxed and my head stays perfectly still. As I’ve said before I’m used to riding naked bikes and this has never been a problem before. It must be how the air moves behind and over the screen reacting with my position on the bike.

I’m now ordering some offset screen spacers from the multistrada group on Facebook. So that’s another thing to try.

  11. Id be interested to see if they work, as I feel my short PP screen also creates more wind noise than I would like

Post a pic when you have them fitted please

  12. Of course. :) I’ll get the noise sorted in the end. I will say the chap has been very helpful. I’ve been asking him questions all day and he was even prepared to make a modified design for me.

  13. Also be interested in impact, as you seem to have the noisiest one out there :p ;)

  14. I doubt mine is any noisier, it’s just combining factors.

  15. Sorry Bradders, can't agree with you there I'm afraid, agree with the peaked being the noisiest but I found my full face helmets next noisiest but the quietest helmet I've found so far is my flip front Shoei, wish I'd bought one years ago.

  16. I've tried those spacers with the stock screen and also with a Puig Sports, sorry to say they didn't make hardly any difference. I've yet to try them on my latest screen which is an MRA Vario with the adjustable thingy. Incidentally I don't get buffeting just a lot of wind noise. I went through this whole process on my last bike and eventually got the noise down to an acceptable level, so I will persevere!

  17. how good is the MRA vario? the spacers are coming but I might order on as a back up plan.

  18. tonight i tried again

    arai tour x with peak
    arai tour x without peak
    hornet ds sonora
    arai astro
    agv k3
    agv k4 evo
davida open face with oakley mx goggles (don't ask)
    shoei x spirit II

i now only have the PP carbon screen as the standard screen was on loan, but i tried all helmets

    with PP carbon screen
with PP carbon blue peter screen
    without any screen at all

    with earplugs
    without earplugs

    with a fleece neck warmer
    without a fleece neck warmer

    in town
    on dual carriageway

the only helmet that stood out was the x spirit II, it was awful. by far the worst of them all. it used to be brilliant on my 848 but on the multistrada it was worse than the peaked helmets

my blue peter screen was an attempt to push the air up and over me, it didn't work. it was worse with every helmet

with no screen at all it made very little difference if any

having a peak on a helmet also made very little difference apart from the x spirit II as I said before, everything was better than that

wearing a thick fleece neck warmer made no difference, but it was worth a try

earplugs of various grades only made everything sound like i was underwater.

my scala cardo is useless with every combination with earplugs over 20mph and without earplugs worked best with the tour x (with and without peak) up to 50mph for intercom and 70mph for the radio.

i'm now waiting on screen spacers and an MRA vario screen.

well my blue peter screen mod made the noise worse. a lot worse!!
