Hire a garage work bay for your bike

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Duke em up, Jan 30, 2013.

  1. Would you pay money to hire a bay with full facilities to work on your bike?

Ive had the idea for a while now and did see a garage in London set a facility up for just bikes (Performance Bikes mag)

I think it would also act as a good community meet location aswell.

  2. You're talking about Oval motorcycle centre of course. Just checked their prices...a bit steeper than I expected, considering you're doing the work yourself...

  3. There was a place in Aberdeen that did it for cars, didn't last too long. I suspect the liability issues may make something like this difficult, not sure.

  4. I've been meaning to check them out for a while, just pop in there on my way home.

Living in London I no longer have my own garage, and this makes sense if you're able to do some spannering, or prepared to learn.

BTW central London franchised dealers charge £70 per hour, last time I bothered asking..

  5. I do all my own work on all my bikes and friends bikes so anyone wanting anything done ie brakes , oil and filter etc in the Windsor area give me a shout

  6. That is abit high but it is London. We have a place for cars in the north east but its of a club. I dont think i could work fast enough at £70 an hour

  7. I've quoted you so you can't take it back!

Form an orderly queue, gentlemen...just behind me...

  8. It's an avenue we are looking at with our new unit - we will be ever so slightly cheaper than London I guess.

  9. Lol

  10. The storage option looks good value at £60 pm if you are going away somewhere for work etc

  11. I do almost all my servicing at the Oval Motorcycle Centre. Hours are cheaper if you bublk buy. In addition to an enormous range of tools and the work benches, there is also a trained mechanic on hand should he be needed. It gives you the confidence to tackle bigger jobs - with a lot of help from Matt I've changed headrace bearings, fork seals and the like. Very soon I'll be needing to do the 30k service on the Multi, which means belts and valve clearanes - wish me luck!

  12. Thats great to hear. Ive been tempted with the Oval as I work in Cent London. I think these garage ideas where you work with a trained mech on site are excellent especially as they will give you a greater understanding of the bike. My local dealer lets me work on my bike in their workshop already and it helps no end :upyeah:

  13. I like the idea, but I know a good mechanic near me who charges £30 per hour. The price difference is small enough to prevent me getting my hands dirty.

  14. I don't know any mechanic that charges £30 an hour!

  15. Indeed, I'm fortunate to have a good workshop facilty of my own but as I tend to do my service/repairs at a somewhat leisurely pace, it would cost me an absolute fortune to rent somewhere by the hour...

  16. Having a mechanic is just as important as the tools available.

But whats stopping a group of people hiring some room in an industrial estate and help spread the costs.

Get any kit in you want and spend the time you want talking or building.

    Insurance might be an issue.

  17. You do now - our rate is £20 an hour for servicing and maintenance tasks, frame builds and customising is by agreement - smaller overheads helps.

  18. 20 quid? B*gger me! So could you tackle something like a 15000 mile service on a Multi? Might be worth me making the trip to you if so. Plus I've always wanted to visit somewhere called Nether Wallop! :)

  19. Feel free to PM or call 07534071550 to discuss.

As for location it gets better - we are just down the road from Middle Wallop - walloping your middle and nether regions has never been so easy

  20. LOL re the Walloping :) I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'm out of the country at the moment so it'll be in a little while but I've made a note of your details. Thanks!
