1200 R 1200r Vs 1200s

  1. im looking at possibly getting a monster R

I was reading up on the 2017- monster S and it’s very similar on paper to the R

Is the R worth the extra premium? No quick shifter seems a bit of a drawback when the S has a blooper and fuel gauge etc

Has anyone tried both bikes? Are they noticeably different?

  2. I have the 1200S. I was put off the R as I was told its a little more sporty riding position, i.e the bars are a bit more of a reach whereas I prefer a more upright position. No quick-shifter was a major decision in not going for the R also. There is 10 BHP more power on the R but the 150 BHP S is plenty quick enough for me. When buying I think you need to ask the question, is the bike going to do a few track days, if so go for the R if its more a road bike opt for the S.

  3. I've got the Monster R.

I've not ridden the 'S' but I was torn between both bikes purely due to the lack of quickshifter on the 'R'.

I've always had sportsbikes so the fact that the 'R' is a little more track orientated swung it for me. Doing my first track day for quite a few years on 5th July at the Donnington Ducati day so that will be a true test of the bikes all round capabilities.

  4. I refuse to try one in case the draw is too much.... add some clip one and you have the cafe racer they should have built.

  5. I’m going to take a look at both the R and the S this week and decide.

I wanted the R for the exclusivity factor and the extra height and proper footpegs

The 2017 S has got rid of the combined rider and pillion pegs and has a height adjustable seat so not sure if I’m reality the R is much better?

forged wheels and the engine mods on the R are Maybe worth the premium alone...

  6. Are you looking at new or used?

  7. New ideally or nearly new maybe for the right bike.

Interested in a 2016 R with a termi exhaust but it’s other end if the country so would be buying it unseen.

There’s a couple of low mileage under 1 year old S for 11500-12000 which seems reasonable

  8. Buy the R.... epic!

Not that I’m biased or anything

  9. Laguna Motorcycles had what seemed to be a well priced low mileage R, with Termis last time I checked

  10. That’s one of the ones I’m interested in. IncNt physically gonand see it though

  11. I have a new S. Still doing the first 630 miles.

For me, it is easily "enough" if you want some fun and want to keep your licence.

I love it and after donkeys years of riding, and having owned more bikes that I could wave a stick at, it is the best bike I have ever owned.

  12. Hi Flatstick 959
I tried both the R and S....bought the R. Mainly due to the S being more of a cramped riding position for me. Knee problems meant that I wanted / needed / felt more comfy on the R, due to the seat height being a little taller and giving me more ‘legroom’. Test rode the S first, and liked it, but after then jumping straight onto the R, it just had that little something more....apart from just the comfort. Not sure what, but that was me wanting the R. Whoever said the stretch to the bars was a little more was probably right. I can’t remember the feel of the S now, but as this my first naked for many years, (Multistrada for 8 years) the riding position is a bit sporty for me. Short rides are the order of the day for me. Did the Ducati trackday on it at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago on it + a California Superbike school day on it. That’s when it comes into its own. Not easy to ride around town, but when you get chance to open it up, it puts a grin on yer face !!
Yes seems a bit shortsighted by Ducati not to have a quick shifter on the R, but that not a big deal for me, as not used to having one anyway. Kinda was thinking that the R would keep a bit more residual value as well, but got no basis for that to be honest, other than gut feel.

Not sure if that helps much.....but hope so !! Nick

  13. Great thanks

I’m more drawn to the R just cos it does feel more special but it’s a bit of a pisser they put things in the S the R really should have came with too.

  14. The quickshifter assists the engine make a great sound when changing down but, I very rarely use mine for up or down changes.

  15. Could get a rapid bike quickshifter as for £300 as I would be putting a rapidbike who on either bike anyway so suppose not the end of the world

  16. Thought I'd show a couple of shots of my R. Just put on a Puig screen which I bought off a fellow Forum member here, and have forwarded him a couple of shots with it fitted, so thought I'd add some here as well. Few extra's on it.... Comfort seat, Oberon bar end mirrors, Termi's, Evotech tail tidy, Evotech engine and rad guards, ASV levers... as well as the screen.

  17. Very nice

How much higher is the comfort seat? Does it make much difference?

  18. To be honest, I don't think it adds much height...a little yes, but not really noticeable. Mind you I had that put on at the time of purchase. I was looking for as much knee stretch as poss, along with the added comfort. It still feels pretty hard to me, but then I am coming to it from the comfort of the Multistrada and the GS !! Tho I did the test ride on the standard seat, I ordered the comfort seat straight away, so have always ridden with that on, so cant give you much of a comparison really. Sorry !! You are not exactly local enough to try it either huh !!

  19. Thanks. I sat on an R the other day and the riding position felt really good - the seat was really noisy and squeaky though due to the real imitation vinyl seat. I was hoping the comfort seat was a better material

  20. The Ducati quick shifter is less than £200 and just needs the rod fitting and switching on at a dealer.
