Overtaking With Double White Lines

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Oli, Jul 7, 2018.

  1. Went through Highway Code and Internet, but couldn't find an answer. Can I overtake a car on a motorbike with double white lines, assuming its a wide road and car moves close to the side, so I won't cross double white lines? I know there are few cases when you are allowed to cross double white lines, but in this case, there's no crossing of double white line. Has been riding few days ago, wide country road and car pulls in front of me from side road - it was a bit close, but I guess if I would be a car, he wouldn't pulled in front of me. He saw me, so he stayed on very left, allowing me to pass while he was gaining his speed. I was riding in the middle of my lane, and because road was wide and car on very left, I didn't even had to change my position, I passed the car actually staying in the middle of my lane. There was an accident ahead, and officer regulating traffic had a word with me, I was apologetic, and to be honest, in that particular case, I could argue that I had to take this actions, as car pulled in front of me. But, I'd like to know, what is actually the law in this case.

  2. What did he say to you then?

  3. Straddling the double white lines at 10mph, or when indicated to do so by a police officer. You may pass a rider-&-horse or council refuse vehicle. However moving cars should be avoided unless they are stationary which is again were the 10mph rule comes in.

  4. Double white lines do not mean no overtaking, that would be a no overtaking sign....
It is illegal to cross them except as gunznbombs pointed out.
    Your copper is an arse...

  5. Agree completely with Chizel. You can pass a car as long as you don’t cross the lines.

  6. first of all its only the nearest one to you that refers to you..the fact they are double is irrelevant.

  7. you should of gone the other side of the road before the solid white and then come back after it had finished..that way you didn't contravene any of the above..:):upyeah:

  8. You are not allowed to cross the white line. So just get to the right side of it and stay there. Most of the time head-on incoming cars will move over a bit for you.

    Happy to help :upyeah:

  9. During my ride over to Germany yesterday I got caught up behind a very large bunch of Netherlands riders on choppers (might have been harleys),

Just as we'd started to hit the nice twisty stuff as well...boring fuckers

After 5 minutes sitting behind them it was obvious they weren't going to take advantage of the roads and I couldn't let them ruin my trip any longer, so I overtook them all in one go :upyeah:

None of them were particularly happy about it, and so have to ask.... was I correct in passing the Dutchys on the left hand side?

  10. you can overtake as long as your wheels do not touch the white line. The way to look at them is to treat them as though they are a kerb

  12. There’s some shocking white lines round where I go for rides with my mates. One is a dead straight road for a few hundred yards and they put double whites and a no overtaking sign. It’s clear that a car would struggle against another half decent car, but a bike can blat past before the pair of you are even 1/3rd of the way along the straight to the corner. I tend to use judgment on the bike and go past, only if I have plenty of space and time. Wouldn’t ever do it in a car.

  13. I'm not trying to be funny, it's a true story , it really is

    But thanks :)

  14. So can you bunny hop over?

  15. Still crossing them though, and most on here have had too many pies  but as Andy B says, keep right of them before they start, only if double you cannot come back if needed and have to forcibly have a head on collision to be within the law :):upyeah:

  16. I presume this is correct to the letter of the law,but if someone was to do this then the police would have a case to do them for dangerous or driving with undue care.

  17. I think you might have to obey the keep left arrows just before the lines start?

  18. Oh FFS, they get you every way!!!

  19. Surely it's only illegal or dangerous if there is a copper nearby or if there is oncoming traffic?
