1098 1098r And Bayliss Owners Advice Needed

  2. This was the 1098R that was for sale at JemSpeed (enough said!) back in march. The one that was on sale for £20k then was removed and relisted for £24k. It looks very clean having supposedly only done 1300 miles, BUT it has no service history apart from a stamp from Riders where it was bought new and one from JemSpeed who probably just gave the engine a wipe over with an oily rag and then stamped the book. Also absolutely no MOT history apart from one done this year. With 4 previous owners I don't believe the mileage. Smells like an ex track bike, maybe run with track fairings and different or had replacement clocks at some point. You would definitely be buying the unknown and definitely not worth the amount the bidding is at. I expect to see this relisted next week as I would imagine the homework hasn't been done before bidding.

  4. Sounds like (another) one to avoid. I think I'm going to give up on my plan to change my 1198S for a 1098R - prices are just going crazy. I've never ridden one and I'm sure they're incredible, but not at that price. So it's keep the 1198S, try a Panigale or even go to "the dark side" (thinking 2015+ S1000RR, although I had a 2010 model before the 1198 and it was a bit boring...).

    BTW - I'm not getting at those on here who were fortunate enough to be able to get a 1098R either new or when they were sensible money. It's places like The Bike Specialists, Jem Speed etc that seem to be doing the damage, along with those who just put bikes in their sitting room to admire while they appreciate!

  6. Hey, I will have 2 out of 3 1098R’s on the road this year, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad :eek:
    But I might just have a new Pani R tucked away behind the sofa :thinkingface:

  7. I wouldn't give up Andrew, I think you'll get one if you are patient. Advertised prices and actual achieved prices are 2 entirely different things. :thinkingface:

    Anyway, I love mine. :heart_eyes: (I only have one, @Exige owns all the others :rolleyes:)

  11. I have just bought mine privately after a long search and refusing to pay the ridiculous prices asked by nearly all of the dealers now. In my opinion, if we pay these prices purely because we want to own something but without proper rationale, a price bubble will occur and many of us will get our fingers burnt. And as @Robarano notes, prices asked and prices achieved are often poles apart!
    I paid the cash sum of 1000€ plus a 2013 Streetfighter S which I had also just bought (@8300€) making a grand total of 9300€. Was I fortunate? Maybe, I definitely was patient. I could flip this bike and double my money, but then I would be without the bike I had been looking for and feeding the speculative bubble we are all trying to avoid.
    Keep up your search if it's the bike you have set your mind on, it will be out there somewhere and they certainly are. I know of two others in an affordable price bracket. Remember, Ducati made more than one and patience pays off.

  13. I've been looking for a 1098R for a while now but think I might stick with my 1098S. It's just a mine field trying to find one, with people trying to pass off thier track thrashed piles of shit as collectors items and those who are sentimentally attached to them but have seen pound signs by over inflated prices from the likes of the Sheffield lot and are just dipping thier toes into market but don't really want to go through with it and just dither and change their mind. I've lost count how many times I've nearly got my fingers burnt or messed about by sellers, and it's not just private sellers I've run into trouble with Ducati dealers themselves even though you'd think they'd know better. Put a deposit down on a Bayliss at a dealer then it turns out through my own digging that the mileage is wrong as it had new clocks at 7k. It was a one owner bike which was supplied new by the dealer selling it and you're telling me they didn't know? Then at another dealer a low mileage mint example of a standard 1098R that turns out to be a ex track bike from new that was owned by a chap who rode it like he was possessed but allergic to serving it. The bike was known to the selling dealers who did the minimum work to the engine but knew it was just a bit of spit and good luck that would keep it together. Once the original fairings that had been boxed from new were refitted it looked new. Luckily I knew someone in the workshop who warned me against it. I think the final straw for me was after looking at many examples I'd managed to find a low mileage R from a private seller which was immaculate with all the history and paperwork in order. We did the deal at at a fair price subject to an MOT and I left a deposit. When the MOT was done we arranged a day for collection and I then payed to insured and taxed the bike. I also spent nearly £800 on some 70mm headers for it (now advertised in the sale section). The morning I was due to collect he sends me an email saying he's had a change of heart and wants to keep it after all!

    Mine was originally a guy from Jersey's track day toy. He was a quick rider and used it, but had it serviced to the point of obsession by JHP. It came with a wad of receipts as thick as a phone book, one of them for about £10k. The original bodywork came in bubble wrap and was still brand new. 3rd gear became notchy (which is common), a NOVA gearbox was bought. He managed to put a small scratch on the tank with his zip loading it into his van, he also gave me a new tank etc.

    Not all bikes are locked up in people's houses in a hermetically sealed, UV resistant air bubble.

  15. Mine belonged to an aerospace engineer from new and has a history file as thick as my arm, along with all the original dealer supplied parts and spares. It just so happened I had a bike he wanted (he also has a Panigale R) and couldn't find so a deal was done which suited each of us. It's going to get a little light track use and when my Speciale is ready it may be sold or p/ex, but I somehow doubt it.
    I've alluded to a couple of bikes over here at fair value but no-one has responded. It won't be long and they will be gone, the Bayliss possibly to me (although I don't like the colour scheme so maybe not)!
     
  16. Sorry there was no offence intended. I think my words may have been taken a little out of context. There's nothing wrong with buying ex track bikes, I've done it myself in the past. Afterall that's what the bikes were built for and if maintained there's not a problem although you would expect a shorter operational life. If you knowingly buy a ex track bike that's priced as an ex track bike then that's fair enough but I've seen people who've tried to pass them off as gently used road bikes for top dollar, and that's not fair. It's about knowing what you're buying and being able to see through the mist, and it not easy. The 1098R is quite easily the most difficult bike I've tried to buy.

  19. That's bad sh1t......sorry you've had such a bad time trying to get the right bike.

    You did drop on a lovely SFS though.....after being messed about by a seller....so hang in there......you'll get the right bike!!

  20. The more I think about it, the more I'm struggling to justify swapping my mint 1098S (which looks almost identical to an R) plus about £12k for a 1098R. I'm not looking for an investment but an enjoyable bike to ride, other than the kudos of owning one I'm not sure whether my riding abilities or rather lack of them would be worth it. :thinkingface:
