Hey everyone. So, I just joined here and have had my 796 HM for about 3 weeks now and been loving it.. until yesterday when she decided to die when put into gear after the side stand was already up.. I did a lot of reading up on the 'net about this being an apparently common issue, so I took it upon myself to see if I could find the fault and fix it myself. However, it turns out the side stand sensor isn't even plugged in anywhere at all. I went through every fuse in the fuse box, replacing each one, including the master fuse under the seat too but still no change. I then pulled out the owner's manual which states that there is a 3 amp fuse "alongside" the battery specifically for the side stand sensor. Well, I spent the ENTIRE day looking at every single bit of that bike and there isn't any 3 amp fuse anywhere to be seen. I suspect the previous owner may have removed or shorted the wires to bypass this, however, since I am not a mechanic/electrician/knowledgeable on HMs in general, I am hoping someone on here can point out to me what I should be looking for wire-wise and EXACTLY (if possible) where I could find this mystical fuse. The only oddity I did discover was at the front. I removed both side fairings and the black screwed-in panels. When stood in front of the bike facing the headlight, the right-hand side of the fork (ie, the left side fairing when on the bike), there was a wire that was seemingly crimped and shrouded but connects/leads to nowhere from there. I suspect that it could be the wires that should lead to the sensor switch on the frame, but I have no way of knowing as there is no connector on that wire. What are my options? 1. Take it to a Ducati dealer and ask them to properly fit a new side stand sensor wire/connection, which means a costly tow 2. (If) I find the 3 amp fuse, replace that (which is what I suspect happened as it was fine until yesterday!?), or, 3. Cry into a bucket as I cannot ride my pride and joy. It's stupid-o-clock at this time so cannot take any pics of the bike now, but if you need it, I'll take a couple and post them on here asap. I am hoping someone on here as a 796 HM that knows exactly what I should be looking for and where... Thanks chaps! Regards, Jaco
Bypass the switch temporarily & ride it. My 1100 switch failed, i used a bent paper clip at the connector to bypass the switch, bought a 2nd hand switch (4 years ago) never had a problem since, though i do carry a bypass plug i made from the old failed switch lead. Never see the fuse you mentin though.
Hi chap. Thanks for your reply, but like I said above, I cannot find the plug connector where the side stand switch connects to on the bike itself, so I am unable to "eliminate" it. Since the side stand is already not connected to anything, one would assume it's already been "eliminated" but I literally do not know where... That is the actual problem... I don't suppose you could explain/take a pic of where your connector is on your bike so I have an idea of where to look for on my 796?

Thanks! I can see where the wire comes from higher up now (at least a little), so will see if I can find a wire that is meant to go down to point 43 from point Q (which is what I'm trying to do).

Thanks Chrisw. I did actually buy that bluetooth one from LonElec last night so hopefully that'll arrive soon and with luck it will show up any errors I am unaware of. On a positive note, thanks to Neeps' pics I found the wire! As can be seen on the attached image, it was elimated as I said, so I can't understand why, when putting the bike into gear , it still cuts the engine... For now, do you guys think I can wire those 2 wires to the plug on the side stand? I will look on ebay to see if I can find the plug so I can do it properly (again, I'm not sure that'll even solve the problem, but would be worth to do it properly anyway)
Are you talking about the click switch when pulling the clutch in? It works fine as far as I can tell. Also, if the engine was on and I put the bike into gear without pushing the clutch in, it would lurch forward, which it doesn't do. It simply cuts the engine...
Hi everyone, so I have to admit something... It turned out to be my fault all along. What had happened, is that the clutch click switch wasn't being depressed enough for the ECU to think the clutch was engaged. I loosened the switch, adjusted it to be closer to the clutch lever so it depresses all the way, then tightened it up properly this time. Bike went into gear and didn't cut out at all. So yeah, it is my fault, because I put aftermarket levers on the bike without taking proper note of this Such an idiot.. Anyway, apologies for this. But at least I've learned more about my bike now, so much thanks and appreciation to you all for helping me troubleshoot!!
Good you got it sorted, looking at that split pin being used to bypass the side stand switch I would be making a tidier more permanent job of it, looks like it's ready to let you down in the future. Steve
Yeah I plan to, but will need the proper connector (no idea what they're called) and which wires to connect on which pins.

Thanks for the link. I ordered the part and received it last night. I really need to do this now as there's a break in the wire on the last 4inches or so as the bike died twice on me while I rode to work today. Any idea which colour goes to which pin or where I can find out? I suppose I could temporarily just tie the wires up in various combinations until it works right? I ask because the sensor plug has 3 wires, yet the wires from the bike side only has 2.
