1200 DVT Rear Shock Sticking / Jerky

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Julian62, Aug 17, 2018.

  1. Help !
The rear shock on my 2016 DVT Skyhook has started sticking and jerks when extending. If I compress the suspension by pushing down on the back rack and then release the extension of the shock isn't at all smooth - it momentarily sticks and then frees up and extends fully. It doesn't seem to do this when the engine is not running and when in sport mode it doesn't feel as bad - maybe because the settings are stiffened up but in Touring, Urban & Enduro mode with the engine running the rear shock is notchy and jerks when extending. It's not so noticeable when riding but for sure something is wrong.

It's currently at the dealers who originally told me they had road tested it and there was nothing wrong - until I demonstrated the problem again to the technician who now finally agrees there is a serious issue but as yet doesn't know what - he's going to consult Ducati on Monday.

I'm already 3 weeks into the problem and with only 4 working days left before I leave for a European trip I wondered if my bike is the only one to have this issue or has anyone else experienced the symptoms and know what needs repairing or replacing.
The bike has never been dropped or damaged and had only done 3,000 miles when the problem started.

  2. Did you check whether the bike required a shock recall? When mine was done I was amazed when they fitted a new shock & not just the mounting bolt & plate.

  3. I had read the shock recall was for the Enduro and the dealer checked if there were any outst@nding recalls when I booked it in.
I would have hoped that this would be the first thing they checked but now I’m starting to think maybe they just did the annual service and forgot the main reason it was in the workshop.
What year and model is yours that had the shock changed ?

  4. You do realize that the suspension is locked when ignition is off and even if you switch it on it unlocks for only little time ( a minute or so) and locks again unless you fire the bike up. At least that is what is valid with my enduro.

  5. No I didn't know that Sotos but the problem I have is there all the time whilst riding. Also what worries me it the Ducati technician agrees there is a problem but has never encountered it before.

  6. Try disconnecting and recording the battery. This will force the rear shock to recalibrate. If there is something wrong it will show as a dss error or it will be ok. That is all provided you are not leaking any oil from the shock.

  7. Thanks again for the advise - I’ll certainly try this if the dealer fails to get thing sorted. There no oil leak.

  8. Mine did exactly the same and it’s a new shock !

  9. Steve, do you mean you had a new shock fitted and it still have this 'jerky' extension ?
    Why was it replaced ?

  10. The shock was the faulty part swapped ecu’s for suspension swapped sensors for ride level and it was the shock it’s self at fault . Sticking on the damper rod a faulty batch of shocks fitted like you say sport mode wasn’t bad unless you try cornering above 100 and fuck me it try’s to kill you ! They swapped it no problem ..

  11. "Sticking on the damper rod" thats exactly what is happening and its a much better description than I have been using The description of sports mode is also perfectly accurate. I'll get onto the dealer on Monday morning and see if your experience can short circuit some of the try this, try that, and go straight to a new shock. (ever the optimist)

  12. Tell them to speak to ducati leeds !

  13. Thanks for the information and advice. My dealer is SMC Sheffield so they should know each other. Do you mind me asking what age is you bike and when was the shock replaced.

  14. 2016 .. and I noticed it as I started opening up while running it in . 1500 miles ish

  15. They replaced the shock on bikes out of warranty I’ve heard to ..

  16. Did you get any joy out of this today?

  17. Replacement shock ordered and promised to be fitted ready for collection on Thursday. Friday = clean & Polish & evening ferry to Belgium.
    Fingers crossed.

  19. Quick update - my DVT is 'March 2016' so technically 5 months out of warranty. (the chances are this was starting to fail within the warranty period but I didn't notice as it's laid up for winter) Ducati have accepted the claim and will supply the shock free of charge (£1,800 can you believe !) - however they will not pay to have it fitted. As it was only ordered a few days ago it won't arrive in time for my trip so the dealer will take a shock off a showroom bike - very understanding and helpful. Slight sour taste is that I will still have a bill for £216 fitting on a bike that had done 3,000 miles before major suspension component failure.
I'm currently finding it tough to keep my enthusiasm for Ducati - sky high servicing charge - replacement discs, hoses, brake master cylinder, throttle and now shock. Hopefully all will fade when I can finally ride the bloody thing.

  20. I can certainly understand your disappointment given the low mileage and financial severity of the part that failed.

It's good to know the dealer stepped up and is making sure the trip can go forward so kudos to them and it must be good to know that the new one will be there upon your return. I understand your disappointment on the fitting fee but given your out of warranty and by some months, missing the £1,800 shock fee must be some positive :upyeah:

Lets hope the trip goes well, you have a great time and you fall back in love with the ducati
