Excessive wind ('uncledons' wings/wind deflectors)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by chickenman, Aug 27, 2012.

  1. Just to note, I contacted Eagle Screens and they informed me they have stopped selling the wings until they can source some better grommets

  2. Finally got mine fitted today after leaving the washers off the inboard screws. They look good on the bike but it could be a good few weeks before we get any decent weather up here in Scotland before I can try them out. I think they might need more than just better grommets to make them an easier fit though.

  3. Were a bit of a fiddle to fit but got there without too much swearing. Black bolts and washers would have looked better though. There's no way Im taking them off to change them.

Went out on a dreary showery run to Dartmoor today. seem to work well with the MRA touring screen.

  4. Fitted mine. First one was so easy I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Second one made me understand!

Did a quick run out and reckon they make quite a difference. The combination of wings, Aztec spacers and CalSci (medium) screen seem to have finally done the trick.

Mind you, I was wearing a new helmet, so maybe the massive reduction in noise was just down to that!!!

  5. Finally fitted mine, had a nightmare as others have described! The outside left hand being the worst, the fixing clip came off and dropped into the fairing, had the remove the fuse box to retrieve!! Can't say I'm taken with the view from the cockpit, from the front they look good IMO.

If they make a noticeable difference then I will source some black fixings and leave them on, the washers don't line up with the rubber grommets either! Great idea, terrible finish!!

  6. Agreed with you entirely - view from cockpit is not good - please let us know if you find some black fixings - i may end up masking them off and giving a quick satin black spray if I can be arsed...

  7. The fixings are cheap as chips, just search for M5x30 Black Button Head on eBay, a pack of 10 is about £2 Bob!

  8. Yeah but some black ones rust - can you get ss black ones?

  9. Not sure but if they have no bare metal surface then they shouldn't rust, can't see them collecting water or anything so should be fine either way!

  10. Does anyone know if the eagle screen deflectors fit/work ok with the Palmer Products screen?

  11. Haven't fitted mine yet but I have an assorted set of grommets to call upon. What I think I may do is pull out those rock hard things that are supplied and substitute them for some slim neoprene ones instead.

  12. Nice!

  13. After reading the negative comments mostly centred on fitting the WD’s I thought I should provide you with some background and give you all some ideas on how to resolve the fitting problems you are having.

John from Eagle screens sent me a set to fit onto my 2010 model (I now have a 2013 model) which I was able to do in about five minutes a side. If I remember correctly I put the inside screw in first and only turned it about one turn, them put in the outside screw again one turn, and then tightened both screws (one at a time) while holding the washers in place over the grommets.
I relayed to John that I thought the grommets were underdone and spoiled what was a well-made WD. But by then the horse had bolted and negative comments were being posted onto forums. Full credit to John he stopped selling them until he could source a better grommet.

Until I realised John had drilled a 15mm hole in the WD’s the simplest way to resolve the issue would have been to made up a set of spacers the same as those I used on the prototypes that can be seen on Andy’s website. Given the size of the hole I would replace the hard rubber grommets with softer grommets and use a longer M5 stainless steel screw or an M5 nylon screw to fix the deflectors. The nylon screw has the benefit of being able to bend. I would also try to camouflage the grommet, washer and screw in whatever way possible so they blend into the cockpit surrounds.

Last Thursday I purchased the two fairing pieces that hold the WD’s and sent them over to John, unbeknown to me he has also purchased the same fairing pieces but his had not arrived from Italy as yet. John intends to come up with a better grommet solution and we have shared several designs.

Apparently it is very expensive to have moulds made to manufacture large quantities of purpose built grommets so the preferred approach will be to find something that will do the job at a reasonable price. For example there are lots of grommets made for cars, (especially the older models) fridges, etc.

A friend of mine hopes to complete a single mould to produce the grommet I designed this weekend. If he does we will pour a rubber solution into it and see what comes out. The grommet will have a 12mm underside section to fit into the fairing recess, an angled slot for the WD 2mm higher, and then a 10mm topside section with a hole through the centre of the whole thing for the M5 screw/washer. In the meantime I will scour all the grommet shops to see what I can find.

As you can imagine this all takes time so I would suggest you have a go at the “solutions” mentioned.

  14. Just received an email from John at Eagle screens. He has received the fairing pieces and as I write this post is working on various fitting solutions. I'm still very confident this story will have a happy ending as you would expect on a Ducati forum.

  15. My latest efforts to conceal the fittings - not perfect but a lot better than before....

  16. Tried mine earlier. Took a couple of minutes to fit but they get hit by my handguard brackets on full lock.
    Took them back off.

  17. The wings are great it's just the fitting them that's a challenge. I've tried pretty much everything mentioned but no luck. I do feel that longer bolts would have done the trick. Now fitted but one without the washer.

When all is said and done its a great bit of kit.
