1260 Oil Consumption

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by AnyOldIron, Sep 23, 2018.

  1. hi All,

Just checked my 1260S and see it is using oil. Admittedly, 650 miles covered last week, including a track day at Cadwell.

Oil level at the low mark and it was only changed 1600 miles ago?

    Is this normal?

    Andy

  2. Did you check it's level after it was serviced to see if the dealer actually filled it up all the way?
It's possible it has always been that level if not

  3. my 1200 dvt uses more oil than the exxon valdez

  4. In the 4500 miles since my 600 mile service mine's used about two thirds of a litre which seems quite a lot compared to my previous bikes.

  5. The specialist Ducati guy I use says the DVT engine squirts oil under the piston for cooling, this vaporises and this is why the engines need a frequent top up. They use more on a constant throttle (mororways) and a litre every 2,500 miles can be common... so it’s vaporised, not burned....

  6. Almost every modern engine I’ve worked on use oil jets aimed at underside of the piston for cooling. It’s not specific to DVT engines so I don’t buy that.

  7. I work on 14l six cylinder truck that use cooling jets. They don’t vaporise engine oil and some of them run double drivers 6 days a week.

  8. Exactly, I work on industrial and marine engines from 1L to 40L. Almost all have piston cooling oil jets and none of them “vapourise” oil

  9. My 1260s also drinks oil, nealy a litre in 2000 miles hard riding though Germany.
My old 1200s DVT did simular last year

Seems that riding at 6k rev plus for extended piriods uses oil

  10. Thanks for all the replies. Seems that oil use is not a surprise? It did get well and truly thrashed around Cadwell Park last week so I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised. First bike I’ve owned in a very long time that’s used oil though.

  11. I'm glad it's not just mine!

  12. Looks like we all need to get some oil supplies in then;)

  13. Mine used half a litre in 2500 miles on our European trip, it certainly uses more on long "fast" motorway runs. Level was constant through all the mountain passes, but had dropped significantly after the long run through France and Belgium to get the ferry, then the ride home. I thought the revised airbox was supposed to cure this?

  14. thats about the same experience I had.... I’ve never had a bike use that much before. The mechanic explained that was normal for the DVT so I now just take a litre with me on long trips.

  15. Worth noting so thanks to all who commented, mine hasn't used any in the last 800 miles but there again I haven't done any fast long distance motorway runs either.

  16. A few weeks ago I did a 600 miles round trip to wales and it dropped from max to min. I’m not that fussed. I won’t keep the bike long enough

  17. Hmmmm....my 18 1260 used no oil during break in and at 1100 miles it still hasn't used a drop. Gonna keep an eye on it through.

  18. Interesting to hear about oil consumption, the last Multi was a DVT and it used oil, especially on motorway trips at constant throttle. 500ml in 2K miles if it involved constant speeds.

The 1260 has now done 11K miles and has not use a drop of oil (oil was changed at 1st Service and at 9K service) and that covers all types of riding including long motorway / autoroute trips. I was expecting the 1260 to use oil and the 2 litres of Shell 20/50 in the garage have not been touched. I wonder why? Small differences in engine / machine tolerances?

  19. Some people had parts changed under warranty on the 1200 dvt where their oil usage was higher than usual. I'm not sure what usual usage is meant to be, but from memory they were using about a litre of oil per 1000 miles.
My 2012 doesnt use any oil and neither did the one before it. they definitely have piston spray jets.

  20. Same. My 1200 DVT also used half a litre in 2600 miles European trip in July. That seems reasonable to me, but much more would suggest something is wrong.
