Giving Up Riding & Selling The Scrambler :(

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by webbo, Sep 26, 2018.

  1. As some of you know, my lower back messed up again three weeks ago at the Donington track day. I couldn't walk properly for over three days afterwards and obviously couldn't do much including doing my job.
Since then it has become better but still not great, something just isn't right.
I thought that after 2.5 years I was slowly making progress but obviously not.
I've not been able to earn much money so I'm now worried about my finances and what the future holds career wise.
Everyday and nearly all day, I experience different types of pain which is starting to consume me. On the whole I'm a pretty tough cookie but this back problem is affecting my everyday life so much, I'm in tears most days with the pain and I'm on medication too. (I'm not looking for sympathy or attention btw lol)
All this has made me have a good think about things.
Being totally honest and realistic as to the problem, unfortunately I feel that it's time to stop riding and sell the Scrambler.
Sad times for me as I love motorbikes, love fiddling with them, cleaning them, researching relevant information and buying parts...and obviously riding them.

I'm trying to be positive about it all as I know it's for the best and hopefully I can save some money to pay for treatment for the back with a view to get back on a bike in the near future.

So the Scrambler will be up for sale in the next couple of weeks.

    Many thanks,
    Duncan x

  2. Sorry to hear that and wish you well in the future with a full recovery - I know what the pain can be having suffered two bouts of incapacity - the longest for nearly a year. But these things largely correct themselves in time or can be corrected.
Good luck and hang around on the forum dude!

  3. I assume you have tried most things to fix your back , so it maybe something you just have to live with ... but after surgery , i still had pain so visited a local chiropractor.. after a year of slowly addressing old injuries that had me twisted like a pretzel , he bashed everything into shape one session and the impact was instant and remarkable .
I’ve twisted myself a few times since , but I’m so much better now than I was for years

  4. Thanks.
I think a step back focusing on rehab etc on the back is what is required.
I'll defo keep reading the posts on here! :)

  5. I've had extensive work done by a chiropractor but it didn't do much unfortunately.
I'm trying physio again but in a different direction so fingers crossed.

    Thanks.

  6. Best of luck mate, if you like spanners why not buy a basket case and spend time making her lovely with an aim to ride again when the back is better?

  7. Hi Webbo, sorry to read you are having to live with such a huge amount of pain. Giving up riding for a while must be a drag, but could also be a wise move whilst you get the problem sorted. Miracles can happen, look at Tiger Woods, back on top after ten years of back problems. GLWS of the Scrambler.

  8. Those that haven't had back pain look at you funny when you tell them how bad it is. I have a bad back and each spasm got worse until eventually I was off work for 6 months. In my case time calmed things down, I still get spams occasionally but I'm now back to riding. Its difficult to stop once it gets a grip of you. I hope time is the medicine you need to get back riding.

    Good luck .
    TB

  9. Back pain can be tremendously intense and if you have not suffered, it's hard to comprehend how hard just walking becomes. I am a fan of good physio rather than chiropractor so good luck with that.

I have personally found that MTB riding and Pilates (don't titter!) keep my core muscles in good shape and that seems to protect my lower back. I avoid lifting anything heavy as that can bugger the back up for a few days.

Hope you get some good treatment, correct advice and hopefully one day, back onto 2 wheels.

  14. Really sorry to read this Duncan but I think you are being wise to concentrate on recovery, I wish I had been mature enough to do similar at the time it happened to me around 27 years ago. You can concentrate on repairing yourself now and there's every chance you will recover enough to ride again if you still feel the need. Don't hesitate to P.M. if you think I could be of any help.

  16. Wot Kirky says above - I'm getting on a bit now and spend more time doing routine maintenance on my back and core, so lots of stretching etc.. its amazing how interconnected everything is.

I've not had the debilitating level of back pain suffered by many, so easy for me to say, and Duncan you have my sympathies, but do try to get lots of opinions as to what might be causing it, because seemingly unrelated things could be at play here. Leg length, gait, core strength, maybe even the chair you sit in everyday at work or in front of the telly!

  19. Best of luck Duncan, hopefully you can get back on 2 wheels ASAP.

Judging by the size of the camera lens Kirky was lugging round with him at Duxford on Sunday take note of what he said !

  20. Why don't you take the scrambler apart so you can't ride it then slowly put it back together again but mint it up.
