1260 Odd Cruise Control Behaviour?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by chrisjk, Sep 24, 2018.

  1. I recently noted that when I set the cruise control on my 1260 S, The small area in the dash that shows it to be set, displays the speed at which it has been set for the first couple of seconds or so after setting it and before it becomes a plain green illuminated area.. This speed corresponds exactly with my satnav GPS speed figure. However, both are typically 4 or 5 mph lower than the speed shown in the dash.

This seems to imply that the bike either has an inbuilt GPS (which I doubt) or that the dash is set deliberately high (easy to believe) and the cruise is set according to the actual speed measured by the bike via the ECU and wheel speed.

I'd be interested in peoples opinions.

  2. UK legal requirement for a speedo is accurate to +0/-10% at 30 mph. Effectively when your speedo is reading 30mph you’ll be doing anything from 27mph to 30mph, never more. The gizmo that takes the info from the speed sensor for the cruise control might add a small additional safety factor to make sure you don’t exceed your set speed. Andy

  3. That is what I assume.

  4. The speedo reads about 5% high. Typical on any motorcycle and my 18 1260 is no different.

  5. I get that, what I don't understand is why and how the cruise control setting is accurate.

  6. Agreed....I found that odd as well but I am kind of glad it is, lol

  7. I don't have any proof but I think that the bike has an inbuilt GPS sensor that works with the Cruise Control and maybe other things to come. Now it is easy to build in basic stuff like a GPS Locator and more difficult to take it out of the software so they leave it in and use it. IMO

  8. My 1260S is pretty spot on indicating the same on the speedometer as cruise set speed.

  9. with my bike, when cruise is set to 80, then speedo stays at around 80.

strange behavior I have noticed is that when cruise is active and I want to overtake a car, then after that normally I gently close the throttle so the bike can gently return to cruising speed. BUT when I have the throttle open very slightly to reduce speed (not enough to keep the speed at 80) then the speed keeps on dropping and cruise does not take over. then if I fully let go of the throttle, then the bike (software) returns to the set speed, which sometimes means accelerating hard back to the selected speed.

maybe that is the same with your bike? maybe because (according to the computer) you very slightly operate the throttle, the software does not keep the speed?

  10. No, I don't believe that is happening. When you say you set the cruise to 80 and the speedo stays at 80, are you seeing the set speed in the green status light or are you going by the big speedo figure when you set it?

  11. My speedo is about 3 MPH off at 70 mph....the cruise will set to 67, etc. Says right in the manual the speedo is about 5% high....

  12. I don't believe anyone reads the original post...

  13. "Set" speed is from the IMU (GPS speed), with display on dash being indicated speed from wheel sensors.

With sat nav fitted and displaying GPS speed, set CC speed matches sat nav exactly.
