@Connor, Cracking thread mate and well done, I like it and nice to see the modern Uni student or at least one of them has a skill.. Keep up the good work
Abandoned this thread for a little while whilst I had my exams.. All done for now. Also got my first class on data analysis, Interesting stuff! managed to sneak some moto2 testing data from Phillip Island in 2014 to have a look over. Just need to rob a bank to get a full Motec system on my puppy to have a play. Incredible amount of calibration required for accurate data, especially when it feeds TC or Engine maps. Also, After about a month of faffing finally have a new clutch kit. Didn't realise how frustrating this would be finding an aluminium set! Then this happened.... Went to take the forks off for a quick clean and oil change, the bottom of the left side fork leg fell to the floor.... Some Twat didn't tighten the cartridge in place!!! luckily I don't wheelie too much! and thankfully it hasn't damaged the threads. Crisis averted, Especially with donnington in 4 weeks!
Went for a quick blast today in south wales, just a short one but enough to remember how angry this beast is! Forks are back together with fresh 10wt oil and guesstimated air gap based on Ohlins manuals. Met a guy in the year above me in the Uni's Othrus racing team who went to a suspension class and he's going to give me a hand to set up the bike for my weight in time for Donnington, Can't wait to unleash it! Managed to find the source of the oil leak, The oil lines to the cooler. Snugged them up a bit and it seemed to fix it....We'll see how long that lasts! New problem now is the clutch seems to have a sticky lever, its as if the lever isn't returning like the seals are sticking, need to have a play and see whats up, new fluid wouldn't be a bad thing anyway.
Nobody told me this before I moved here.. In Swansea they don't have wheelie bins, what is going on?!
Not been out since that last picture, But I'm going to donnington on tuesday and judging by the forecast its going to be, well.. brutal. I believe the wets may be making an appearance!
So.. 3000 miles later, it's been to the TT and just back from a trackday at Silverstone. Clutch is absolutely buggered, sheared all eight bolts from the flange plate on the clutch drum some how. Hopefully get out to one or two more trackdays before the winter. In a month or so it'll be ready for the winter strip down to make it into a proper bike. I'd also like to play about with the fuel tank and centre of mass, it's a little too high for me just now. Considering remaking it and putting it under the seat and moving the battery and ECU under the dummy tank cover. I was at Goodwood FOS this year with work and got to spend a few hours looking at a 999rs F06 And GP05 during setup before it got silly busy during the event, got lots of inspiration and with my track time and road miles I'm convinced the dummy tank needs to be much narrower. Other than that the ergonomics are actually really nice, played around alot with the geometry and suspension during the last few months and I'm very happy with how it feels. Would like it to be alot lighter but honestly.. that's just money! Although forged wheels are definitely on the table for next year, mine weigh a ton.
SO.... I'm not holding my breathe for another trackday this year, with work and me being back in Uni I just don't have the time. So I'm going to strip the bike down and give it a proper shine up now that I'm happy (ish) how everything is. I'm considering modifying the tank cover so that I sit about an inch further forward and maybe include knee pockets so the bike is a little narrower, looks like I have a little bit of wiggle room between the cover and the tank and HOPEFULLY! that will be the small bit of adjustment I need. the seat pushed forward; Below - The seat in current position And yes.. The tank is getting re-welded to turn it from a sieve to a full tank. As for the knee pockets, I've been lucky enough to view some special kit recently and they all seem to have very similar narrow tank design. GP05 Desmo (Checa?), Ex-Marquez RCV, F05 999rs (I think); .......And my plus size model below; My tank cover has more than enough space underneath to make it much narrower, It depends how far away I want to go from the Sport Classic shape tank. But for usability.. Especially on track I prefer ergonomics. I currently store a friends bike (Yamaha XJ6) in my garage but that should be away in the coming weeks and replaced with a large shelving unit to store all the bits that come off. I'm looking to get the chassis powder coating, the body work professionally painted and a few other Gucci bits. I would like are to get rid of that horrible swingarm, get some lightweight wheels and a quickshifter. This recently caught my eye on ebay; Its sexy enough and looks like it will fit the 999 with my Ohlins shock, Am I right in thinking it will fit xx98 and Pani wheels? Done some work on an 1199s recently and the wheels are hilariously light compared with my cast iron ones. This is all when funds allow, Just waiting for bargains to sneak up. Another interesting find was that it looks as though the belts got quite hot during the trackdays, plenty of rubber behind the covers and they loosened up quite a bit so I re-tensioned them. I've seen the race bikes have cooling ducts for them so it may be something to look into. Lastly, My engine has some rather nasty paint flaking. When I take it out I'll have a closer look but it runs spot on and its just not worth taking it to bits to paint it just yet, Any ideas?
That swinger wont fit the 999 cases. You can only use 998 848 sized spindle rear wheels. Pani front will be too wide in the disc width dept
For belt cooling I screw the top covers to a bit of ply then mount that to a mill mc bed. Then use an 8mm slot drill and machine slots in the top sections
What's the difference in size? Is it quite big or could it be machined to fit? Could you not change the eccentric part to a Pani unit or are they different?
The swingarm you showed uses bearings fitted to the engine. the 999 engine is too narrow at the pivot shaft. You will need to weld on bosses of the correct width and offset to the cases, then machine bores to fit the bearings into. You cannot machine the od of a pani/1098 eccentric as the wall isnt thick enough. To fit a pani/1098 rear wheel to a small eccentric, I would make a new spindle with the larger mount/boss on one end and the 998/smaller bearing journal to fit in the small ecc. You would need to work out the wheel mounting back plate/drive position, to get the correct wheel mount offset.
