So just booked in with Riders of Bristol and they want £1200 for the service and MOT. Call JHS and they said email them and they will get back to me. Called Luigi Moto and the dude was quite helpful although he said they don't do Panigale engine stuff. Advised me to try MotoRapido, but they didn't answer the phone, so I've emailed them. The Luigi Moto dude said he wouldn't do the valve clearances as they don't usually need doing, but would do a compression test instead. He said he wouldn't trust Riders... I wouldn't have the valves done if I was gonna keep the bike long term I don't think... but I need to sell it next year and I'm planning to move to Australia, so I need everything to look right in the service book. Any advice guys? I'm at 14,700 miles now, and the MOT is due at the end of the month... so I want to get it done together.
@camelfarmer ....2 things :- Are you sure they will let you move to Australia what with you having stinky feet ? Luigi Moto are not the only people who think the valve clearance work is not necessary, the indy I use who has decades of Ducati experience has a similar outlook . I cant speak for anyone else but if I was buying I would not let the lack of a check put me off if everything else stacked up.
I'm with you... but I don't know how many people are going to take a similar view. I suspect if I try to save a few hundred now, I might find it harder to sell it next year. It's a shame, cause I'm much more of a keep it till it dies sorta person.
Agreed with above but hard to say it won't be used as a bargaining chip but if it's that uncommon to do valve clearances then no disadvantage compared to other bikes with similar mileage?
A panigale with over 15K miles is rather rare, so I think I'll be competing with lower mileage bikes, and I plan to sell it cheap due to the higher mileage anyway... About £500-600 pounds.
@camelfarmer I cant imagine you`ll lose £500 or more when you go to sell so if it was me I would leave it. Probably more important to have a new mot carried out when you sell so whoever buys it thinks they dont have to do anything to it for a year other than fill it up with petrol.
Thanks for your advice dude, I'll take it into consideration. JHS have got back to me with £1300 for service but they've included suspension in that, so I'm waiting for a quote minus that, cause that definitely doesn't need to be done.
if it was me i would not spend money on the service. you wont recoup it and the buyer would rather get it done where he want and would welcome the saving. i know i would.
Was about to say the same. IMHO if valve check is due and not done, Amy buyer is simply home to deduct as a minimum the service cost. So £1200 as quoted.
Direct experience with all three. Riders are not good. I bought my Monster from them new and had it serviced there when it was new and in warrenty. A few years ago, I was rding along (not six miles after filling up) and it died - had to be transported home. Went to JHS and they farted about for weeks and could not work out what was wrong. I phoned up Richard at Louigi and told him my sorry tale. i said, 'could you fix it but you'll have to get it from JHS as it is dead?' Richard agreed to fix it but would not pick the bike up. He told me that he has had trouble with the guy who runs JHS and the last comment that he'd heard was that the guy wanted to knock him out. He warned me to watch my step if I got the bike. At that time, I had a Ford Galaxy. I can confirm that a Monster fits in one. Anyway, I got the bike after several weeks and matey was not there. I took it straight down to Somerset on a Friday, I think it was. Richard said that he's really busy (as he always is) but will try to get some time. On Monday he called me to tell me it was all fixed. He said that he was coming my way later in the week and would drop the bike off. The problem was the fuel filter was blocked (I now know this is a common issue). Richard fixed the bike in 20 mins and bought me the old filter. It was the original that Riders had never changed - despite it being specified in at least the first service. So, use Riders only if you need a Ducati dealer stamp. Keep away from JHS. Use Lougi Moto if you want somebody who knows what they are doing. Seeing all the bikes and stuff he has got in Clutton is worth the trip anyway.
Bring it to Australia with you, it can be shipped with all your other bits and the import process is fairly simple and no import duty if you already own it. If you like the bike keep it, great riding roads and weather here.
Around 50% less than is being quoted on here. Paul charges £35 an hour. There is around 10-12 hours of labour involved in the Desmo service.
