3 months ago I took the plunge back onto a Ducati, this time a Monster 1200R with 4500 miles on a 16 plate. After owning it for a couple of weeks I began to realise the battery had had it, so back it went for a new one. Since the new battery was fitted it’s been fine up until Saturday, admittedly it hadn’t been started for 5 weeks due to holidays etc but it is stored in the garage on my Ducati optimate. I go to start it and it takes ages to the point I can hear it throwing out the starter after so long ( a wizzing sound ). Eventually it starts so I leave it 5 mins to tick over and all is well the following morning when I started it again for a blast out. I cover 120 miles put it away again on the optimate, until this evening when again it struggles to start. So my question is before I set fire to it does anybody else have a similar issue ?, I don’t believe it’s the battery as it’s new and seems strong throughout the eventual starting Sorry for the long post
I've got a 2016 M1200R (from new) and never had issues like this, even after being off charge for weeks and I'm doing less miles than you I'd say. If you bought it from a dealer, I'd be going back to check it out.
I have a weirdo icon counting down in yellow with another symbol showing what seems like a battery. Going to OYB tomorrow to query what is going on! Manual doesn't show these at all & was showing -29Days today. Put my bike on charge so I'll see tomorrow if the icons go away.
That's not a long post! You need more practice - and add some pics! Because Ducatis are quite high compression twins, they do take some effort to turnover. In the past, when any of my bikes have a fault that prevents the engine from starting, then the battery doesn't take long before giving out. Nothing wrong with the battery, but it is tired out and wants its recharge. It is possibly something that is stopping it from starting easily after not being used for a bit - possibly fuel related. The battery may not be the cause, just the effect. This is assuming that your charger is working...
I believe that’s the service countdown indicator. Counting down to service. The “battery” symbol is supposed to be a calendar. Mines just come up too!!
I would start the bike, take it for a ride and then leave it off the Optimate for a few days and see if that solves the issue. You can then eliminate the charger as in issue......or not.... depending on the result.
I don't really think the battery is big enough for the bike, I had a word with my dealer within a week of buying my bike as it is very slow to turn over even though it always starts up, dealer (predictably) said they all do it and it's normal for Ducati. I am keeping my eye on it as I am not really happy with it as I feel the engine should spin, not just barely turn over.
Yes - to begin with and catch. If something is not right then it will slow down as the battery fades. Are you far from Riders? If nearby then I would pop infor a coffee. You can hang around in the car park for a bit and have a listen to other Ducatis being started.
The starter does not slow down, it's always very slow but the bike always starts up straight away. I have two other twins and they both spin up quickly and start immediately, I just find it odd and wanted the dealer to log it in case my battery does fail.
The way the battery is mounted is quite a compromise design, and if the battery has been replaced it's entirely possible the terminals weren't tightened properly - they're pretty fiddly, from what I recall. I had a dodgy battery when I got my bike new in 2016 - replaced under warranty and it's been fine since - even with very sporadic use this year.
2016 1200R from new and no problems with the battery and it doesn't get used a lot, starts on 2nd or 3rd turn over, the turnover is slow too, always has been.
