Jesus Roy, all I said was that the fecking thing to me is the audi bike. To me, it's the audi bike. Audi bike, the panigale, cappiche? I'm done...
T9R was built as a race bike for he road, last one to be done like that imo. So obvious when you try and strip something; changing the shock, or fairings, or accessing anything on the 848 (fork clamps?!!) is a pain in the arse, and altho the Pani looks a step forward, its clear from some of the servicing/repair stories coming out (eg the change of heat guard which means removal of the rear subframe?!) that its not that far on....it seems a road bike being turned into a racer, ala IL4 could be taling bollox of course
that the 999R is a racebike for the road is not exactly true... anyone who modded a R and want to sick on F0 or RS bits, finds out that none of them really fit.. to rebuild a R to an RS takes changing almost every important bit such as the entire frame and swingarm.. ( just try to fit a 63MM exhaust) .. the 749R comes much closer to the 749RS than the 999R. this due to its rocker and triples... it also sports a different (larger) fuel tank.. this said, the R is a wonderfull bike that will handle all of its power without the TCS... the ones daring that on a pani are truly brave... the R is noticably lighter then an S and handles very sweetly... but the pani is next gen and the tcs and abs play de big part in this... if these are well developped, riding it is different as it will take care of you if you take it where it should go... byond fast... but : at current prices, there is not much left to loose on a 999R... buy a pani new and it will depreciate to 50% over 4 years... i feel for you : i couldn't choose, so no found myself doing both.. grtz Koen
Well if I could afford them both I would!!! Asking around I have been advised to go for the 05 999R but trawling the net I havent been able to find one. Can get a reasonable deal on a pani though. Third option is to maybe splash a bit of money on mine, maybe a full sytem with custom map amd maybe some lightweight wheels but by the time I have done that I could have bought an R and most the way to a pani. Other problem is when you go to sell you never get the value back on the accessories. Mmmmmm Out of interest what sort of value could I expect for my 999? It's an 06 with one previous owner, 7000 miles, FSH, excellent condition, Ohlins rear, sigma slipper, hugger and a single seat conversion. Also had a dyno run last year showing 125bhp at the rear wheel.
06 was the last 999R but they only made 190 ish ( numbered ) It was produced so that it could be raced in the AMA series . Mines number 73 .
Maybe but I have the Ducati bug. I might be able to convince Mrs T to the Pani but no way for the BMW. Anyone any ideas on what I could expect for mine?
The fact your struggling to source one tells you all you need to know Simon! Ownere are starting to hang on to them primarily due to Ducati's build quality on later models. Am pretty sure they'll be held in high regard as the years pass. As you said you could spec it up a long and costly adventure, but even with a damn R' engine in the thing it would always be seen as technically a speced up machine which is fine if you intend to keep it? As royum says above there are a lot of bikes between a 999 & 1199, I'd go base pani 'used' if the deal was right or even 1198sp if ya like yer slipper, 848evo has similair power/ weight thing going on? Or better still a move away from ducati and its ludicrous maintenance costs, BMW or rsv4? Loyalty to the brand is certainly not rewarded at any dealerships I've ventured into and as ever upgrades and tlc are optional? Crazy!!! But keep searching bikes pop up nearer the season start? If its what your set on just be patient. Good luck.
Yes, a 2006 999R is hard to come by. And there's a good reason for that. Its a sublime bike. I sold mine (2006) about 18 months ago and its the only bike in my life that I've regretted selling. Best bike I ever had.... Bugger Never ridden the 1199 but from 999R experience its a no brainer. Bide your time and get a post 05 999R. Good luck.
And don't worry about the power difference. I moved up (power wise) to a 1098R and nigh on shat myself at Cadwell when I started cracking it open. My lap times were quicker on the 999R. Its a far friendlier/linear power delivery. The 1098R is laugh out loud savage in its delivery. Mind you, mine has been breathed on... DP race cams and bigger bellmouths, 70mm termi system and ECU, race filter and timing. I had a dynoed at Cadwell one night and it read a 190.3HP at the rear wheel with 99.4NM torque. Seems a high reading to me compared to other stuff. I'm not doing it again though (dyno test). I was crapping it standing there listening to having my beloved engine battered!!! Not for the faint hearted by gum...
What are you going to do with it? Sunday blast, collectors bike? Track it? If its the former then get one. Sure it won't lose money and they are plenty quick enough for the road. If its the latter get a 1199. Things move on and the 1199 is lighter and much more powerful. You have got to spend quite a bit on a 999R to get a really fast track bike. I did and although its fantastic I am itching for a Pani.
I'd get the pani, laughable reading it has lost midrange you only have to look at dynos to see it is still strong, it also has a proper top end, I have a 999 and a 998 but a panigale will be next as I want the power as its fun , same reason of the old shape I'd have the 1198s as I loved mine, still the only bike I could wheelie at 80 and ride through to 140 plus, the midrange on that bike was addictive, an awesome engine and that's for me what Ducs are all about
Have you ridden a Pani? That's the reason for the mid-range comments regardless of dyno results, it's how it feels.
