1198 Oil Leak

  1. During my recent trip to Parcmotor my 1198 developed a small oil leak, it appeared that oil was seeping from between the underside of the airbox and the throttle bodies at the front of the engine and subsequently dripping down onto the front header and into the bellypan, resulting in about an eggcup full of oil in the belly pan after 2 days on track.
On tickover the leak looked very minor and almost insignificant but presumably under load it was pushing more oil out, whether all the oil in the bellypan was coming from here or whether it was also coming from the duckbill overflow tube from the airbox I don't know. Having checked the oil level through the sight glass the level was at the higher of the 2 marks, should I be running it at high RPM with the level this high? I've now removed the airbox and throttle bodies with a view to replacing the gaskets between, I expected to find a puddle of oil in the airbox but not so, just an oily feel to the inside of it.
So what's going on? I await the valued opinions of the more knowledgeable ones :).
    Thanks in advance.

  2. Crank building up to much pressure? Have you checked the breathers are clear ??

  3. I have been advised by our workshop to use the lower oil level line for the track on my 1098R. 12 days in over the last 2 years and no issues so far. Andy

  4. Thanks for the quick response cookster , the 2 breather pipes appear to be clear, don't know what the breather valve does though and if it were to be faulty would it cause this type of problem?

  5. Valve stem seals or possible guides??

  6. Thanks Andy that's reassuring to know, as since this problem I've read the same elsewhere. Think while it's apart I'll replace the gaskets and do an oil change and fill to the lower oil line and see what happens next time out.

  7. Wouldn't this just make it burn oil though?

  8. if you look at the corse crankcases they have a lower oil level window that puts the required level to around the bottom level mark. I always go with that..

with regard to the crankcase breather there is a reed valve mounted just inside your right foot on the crank cases. this works to let out excessive crankcase pressure in to the airbox, but is one way so the air box pressure doesn't fill up the crankcase. Imagine the pressure inside the airbox at 150 down say hanger straight, you dont want that resisting against the underside of the pistons!!

Now Some people when they rebuild an engine will remove the reed flaps inside the valve to eliminate excessive crankcase pressure...but of course this can have a detrimental effect of the airbox pressure blowing into the crankcases with the potential of oil mist coming up into the air box. ;)

  9. Thanks for the detailed explanation Andy, I even understood it ;), I'm hoping it's just an oil level issue now, time will tell .

  10. Didn't Mark rebuild your motor? Ask him what he did about the breather???

  11. Yes he did, think he left the breather standard though, going to speak to him this week, so will confirm.
