749 Bike Revs When Throttle Shut

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by DanielHowden, Nov 4, 2018.

  1. To give some history here, I have a 2004 749 with 2600 miles one it. Previous owner had it as an ornament for 14 years.

All has been fine until I took a trip from Norfolk to Wales this weekend. I was sitting at a steady speed on the M4 and I came to some traffic. When I shut the throttle the bike only slowed a little. On pulling in the clutch the engine revved to 6k. I managed to pull over but could not find that the cables were snagged on anything. it was dark and there was little more I could do so I decided to carry on. I checked regularly and after a while the revs returned to normal when I closed the throttle. This problem continued for another 3 times.

I am wondering if there will be an electrical reason why this would happen. There seemed to be no mechanical issue that I could identify. On one occasion turning the ignition off and then on again returned the revs to normal. When I returned home I went through several time opening the throttle with the engine off and closing it either quickly or slowly but every time I did this I could hear the butterflies closing to the stop.

I would be very grateful for any thoughts on the problem and happy to discuss a solution to this frustrating problem.

    Thanks, Daniel.

  2. How's your fast idle lever ("choke") working?

  3. I'd lift the tank off and check the butterflies do in fact automatically spring shut when the throttle is released. My 748 hadn't been used for a while and there was a) corrosion in the throttle body and on the spindle preventing the valve from opening & closing as it should.

Alternatively, you might have an obstruction in there (hope not), but the air filters deteriorate over time and bits could have got sucked in. Did you replace them or are they the originals? Anyway, best to have a look.

  4. If you can’t find a mechanical reason for the high rpm. It could be an air leak after the butterflies? Split intake rubber? Loose or broken hose clip on the throttle bodies??

  5. Aftermarket grips can migrate along the throttle tube and foul the bar end

  6. OK cool, so it looks like it isn't an electrical problem then. I thought that maybe the ECU in some way could control the RPM.

So I should have said that the first thing I checked was the fast idle lever but it was already home and when I next went to start it cold it worked fine.

Seems like I need to lift the tank and take a look. A lot of suggestions of possible issues I may have.

Thanks for the feedback, I will check under the tank and come back here.

    Daniel.

  7. Do you have a scottoiler?

  8. This is a good question. I do not have a Scottoiler, my chain oiler does not need a connection of any type.

  9. tell us what the top of the black plastic air box looks like!

  10. Sure I can do that. What's the reason for the ask?

  11. Thats all you will see under the tank
