We all know how poor the rear brake is,changing pads seems to make bugger all improvement,so are we looking at changing calliper to get some braking here?So has anyone found a way to get a dramatic improvement. In a funny way it is strangely nice to have a rear brake that you cannot lock up though!
The only way I found working for me, was to take off the rear caliper, gave a good cleaning up with brake cleaner, rubbed the pistons gently with steel wool, flushed the line with new fluid and replaced the pads with EBC HH ones. It's not like on Jap bikes, but I can feel it now slowing down.
Ha ha A piece of equipment that the Italians think of as unnecessary, but were forced to put it on the bike due to international safety regulations.
it's often down to the rear brake being used too hard in it's early life resulting in glazing of pads and even disc faces as a result of constant hotter-than-ideal usage. Although standard rear discs are good from a corrosion (and on the whole warp) point of view they aren't that good at soaking the heat away plus a larger diameter would have helped. If your disc has a hint of yellow-brown/straw discolouration (and has lost it's 'feel' and you can hardly lock it up) then you could deglaze the faces* for a temporary cure. If blue or darker then it's probably worth replacing along with some softer compound pads (and sympathetic use!). *ditto for the pads but only if you feel confident about flatting down evenly and possible breathing equipment needed.
Many thanks, bed EBC HH already in,love them on the front, colour of disk is good, guess brake fluid pressure not able to get high enough to lock up the rear, sticking my legs out to creat extra drag is mo effective!
Hi if your talking rubbish rear brakes then the real king of this title goes to the APRILIA RSV FACTORY, i like a rear brake and on my Aprilia it's complete rubbish.:frown:.
Im sure ducati specify the worst master cylinders for the rears as there is no on for it. Im going to be looking into an alternative.
Is it the same rear brake as the injected SS? My rear brake is very good, my mate noticed how good both brakes are when he rode it too.. Perhaps the caliper needs a rebuild?
The rear brake on my ssie was shite too,the aprilia is famous for boiling the fluid as too near the exhaust.
similar can happen on 748/9** as also right next to exhaust. If there is too little free play in the pushrod travel when in the 'off' position you can start with binding, leading to fully locked on rear brake.
re: hot crankcase I think you are right - hot exhaust/hot crankcase it's all bad news if there's no room for the brake fluid to expand if it decides to get 'frothy'
l dont use my rear brake l'd have to ask the mot tester if it works LOL l have to agree that the case mounted ones are even worse, heat or less drop /head of fluid from the resevoir Steve B
On monster I have a rear master from 848, reservoir is mounted remotely away from engine and until recently away from heat, now next to pipe. I can lock up rear at any time but lever travel is huge to do that plus there is no feel to brake. On/Off comes to mind.
Might be worth a rebuild, new fluid and a set of sintered pads. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, in good shape its a nice progressive stopper.
Took you along time to work that one out,you must have been rising with your foot,on the brake pedal then.lol
I had a similar problem and ended up having to get a new master cylinder, as the OEM ones don't have service kit readily available.
