New shape 848 / baby 1199?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Ducatibob848, Feb 20, 2013.

  1. No mate you`re right 100% it didnt replace it. but if you read my last again you will see that I was referring to 848-848 SE and 1098-1198.
    Again 100% the only opinion that matters is OP own, but was he after an opinion or more info? He asked for info which no of us really have.

    My opinion was he would regret buying a brand new bike for it to be replaced there after.
    My advice is to wait, save up a bit more cash while finding out more on the possible new bike and test ride both.

    You and others may not agree with my opinion, but given the circumstances my advice should be seen as pretty sound unless others `personal opinions` are more important than give someone good advice. (for the record that remark isnt aimed at anyone) :smile:

  7. Rumours suggest a 799cc version, but IF Ducati could build a competitive 750cc they would so it could be eligible for 600 races, guess we'll see in November at the Milan show if anything is coming in 2014

  8. For what it's worth...

    I went through exactly the same decision making process as the OP and opted to go for the 848 Corse. My reasons were based on these assumptions (and remember you can't predict the future, no matter what Ducati have done before - you can only base your decision on the facts in front of you on the day).

    1. I have always loved the 1098/1198/848 shape.
    2. I loved the 848 demo bike I rode.
    3. I have no idea what will replace the 848 - capacity, power, looks, price level, characteristics... anything.
    4. I am buying a bike now, not in a year's time.

    Because of all these, and the fact it was actually an 848 I was looking for originally when I went bike buying, I went for the best new 848 I could (just!) afford. If they replace it next year, fair enough. I'm expecting they will, but it'll either be faster and more expensive or smaller and about the same price. Neither of those are what I want. I could maybe have stretched to a Base or nearly new Panigale but although I love the looks, I don't need 195bhp and would rather have 130bhp that I can at least try to use "properly".

    All this meant I went for the 2013 Corse. Which I finally get a week tomorrow. I've had 6 months to mull over the buying decision as I paid the deposit in July (!) and I am still delighted with the call I made. Most of it was based on the factors above.

    Not sure if this ramble helps even in the slightest... :smile:

  9. Id say you always wanted the corse SE just wanted some other folk to give you that warm fuzzy feeling about splashing out. If thats what you want then theres no reason to be asking, just go get it. No one else is gonna ride it and fuck it, if they bring out a baby pan and u want to, trade her in. women have shoes hand bags, clutch bags, clothes clothes and clothes and more clothes, then accessories and jewelry and scarfs and stupid little dogs and massive phone bills from talking to their girlfriends when instead they could have just come over, and beauty treatments...............men, all we ask for is a beer with the lads, a bit of sport on a wknd, a hobby and a god damn motorbike.

    CAN I GET A HELL YEAH
    ?

  10. Who are these women you talk of?

  11. Granted Andy thats fair enough. What bike did you have before or still?

  12. 2007 GSXR 750. Similar power and weight to the 848 and it was the best bike I've ever ridden up until the 848 too. Owned it for nearly 6 years and I loved every day of it! :smile:

  13. stereotype. its a joke that men will laugh at and say to themselves "yeah thats is all i want" some may write back hell yeah so long as they misses doesnt see it and others wont be arsed....and women on her will immediately jump on their high horse, take offence like I meant it personally to them and take the bait....Il log a bite rep as at 08:06 :biggrin:

  14. Mood swings - available every 1/2 hour

    Log another at 8.15

  15. know the feeling, I got a 750k6 and its really the perfect blend between power weight and handling. you still got it?
    In my younger days when cost dictated the bike and when I bought it, I got what was available at the time for the money in my pocket. Iv had new machines for the last 7 yrs, gsxr750 gsxr1000k8 and 1199s and got both the later. Now if I had to sell the tho in order to get the pani but then have to wait there is no way i would have waited. Id of done exactly the same as you and got something I liked there and then But having a bike that I enjoy and works fine to ride about on till something new arrived....now thats a different story

  16. boom:upyeah:

  17. Nope, I sold it. I figured it was too similar in purpose to the 848 so I'd not use it much. It was still mint when I sold it so the buyer got a good deal! I would like to have more than one bike and sell the car, but I still need a car at times so it's not really a goer. Maybe I'll end up with a winter / project bike one day... I'm expecting to keep the 848 for 5 years or so. But that'll depend on how I get on with it once I own it.

  18. meanwhile back on topic before the police perform a sting (or should that be before sting does another police tour because he's down to his last 200 million)

    just wondering if I would swap mine if they did a 'newer' version

    The answer would probably be no as I've had my engine dyno'd and done various mods and its only a year old

    If they bring one out in a year or two then I might upgrade - but more likely to buy the KTM if they decide to produce that

  19. Sorry. I was trying to keep it on topic re the OP's question on the 848 replacement. But I drifted onto the GSXR thing. :smile:

    In short, my opinion is that the OP should get the 848 Corse.

  20. Getting back on topic...

    Looking at the dimensions of the SuperQuadro engine (at 112x60.8), it's very hard to see where they would get a "smaller" engine from given Ducati's preference for simply changing the bore and/or stroke size slightly to give a bigger or smaller engine.

    An example is the 749 to 848 - the 749 was 94mmx54mm and to get the 848 they simply upped the stroke to 61.2 to get 849cc at 94x61. The jump from 999 (104x58.8) to the 1098 was a stroke increase up to 64.7 to give 1099cc. The upgrade from 1098 to 1198 was a tweak of the bore and stroke: bore changed from 104 to 106 and the stroke went up from 64.7 to 67.9, so again no massive changes. Even looking back at the 916 the drop to 748 was 4mm on the bore and 7.2mm on the stroke.

    The problem with SuperQuadro is that it sits way out at a 112mm bore - that's far bigger than anything else Ducati have ever done (1198 at 106mm). So using their previous tricks of reducing the bore and stroke slightly, there's nothing in the <900cc range unless you make a big jump. The bore has to drop to 98mm (a 14mm drop) to hit 917cc at the same stroke. That's a massive piston size reduction which would mean wasted space in the cylinder heads ... basically you'd want to redesign the engine to accomodate that!

    The other issue is that reducing the bore and stroke down bring you back down to old Testastretta engine dimensions - reduce the stroke of the 1199 down by 2mm to 58.8 and the bore down from 112 to 104 and you've just built yourself a ... 999. Ok, so it's go a revised engine around it which would give it more power, and so on ... but it may be a blocker to going that route.

    If I had to pick a figure about a smaller engine sized SuperQuadro engine, I would look at a reduction in both bore and stroke to retain the "over-square" characteristics of the engine. It also appears that the trend is for ever increasing engine sizes, so I doubt we would see anything as low as a 750, and it doesn't make sense to make it bigger than 900 as it is too close to the 1199, so I think it would be around the 850cc mark, and this fits in with the "family".

    The problem is the massive reductions required to go that way, but here are some examples:

    CC = Bore x Stroke = reduction, reduction
    1199 = 112 x 60.8 (reference)

    848 = 100 x 54 = -12mm, -6.8mm
    864 = 100 x 55 = -12mm, -5.8mm
    880 = 100 x 56 = -12mm, -4.8mm
    piston reduction too big? equivalent to a 6mm liner in the cylinder!

    866 = 104 x 51 = -8mm, -9.2mm
    piston verging on ok, massive stroke reduction!

    The more I look at it, the less it looks likely!!
