Hi, Has anyone out there had their bronze coloured frame powder coated in the correct colour? I went to a local business and the nearest they could get to a match was a gold colour. They have done several Ducatis but for some reason they can't get a match. I didn't go into why. It looks very good in my opinion but I would like to keep as close to original as possible. Here is some wheels they did on a 748. Ducati 748 BIPOSTO | eBay Thanks in advance. Steve.
I have a couple of VERY small cracks on my 900ss frame, you have to look very hard to see them tbh and i will keep a eye on them. Top advice Steve (Mr R)
I found a company that has such a brilliant range of powder coating colours I would be spoiled for choice......They even do it in what looks like nickel plating............. ......but I can't find them any more.........might have been Camcoat. AL
Rubbish, powder coat will show cracks as much as anything else. Welding the cracks will not solve the problem. You need the gusset plates installing. I have a company who powder coats my frames and they can get a colour which is as near as dammit a match. Close enough that you can not tell it's different to original. Find a new provider. Not Camcoat, another local to me.
Thanks for all of the advice so far. It is appreciated. Supervee who powdercoats your frames? Cheers, Steve.
Yes Mate. Steve B's offered to weld a brace in which Darren 470four designed. As in powder coating can hide cracks etc If anyone is going to the expense of having a frame powder coated its a good idea to get it braced. Many frames in 600ss dd bikes were powder coated and cracks were found far to late and i have seen crashed bikes with the front ends completely sheared off with tell tale signs of large hairline cracks unseen before. One of our customers at work has a large metal degreasing mc of ours and specialise in coatings in powder etc to high defence spec. Powders come in all kinds and are flexible.
Might be worth a pic of Darren's brace in this thread......I had one, but I can't find it......Twas I that suggested to Darren he should have 'legs' either side to wrap around the tubes, but I don't recall if he did that in the end. If he did add the legs, the advantage of Darren's brace is, I think, it could be used on upper or lower tubes at the headstock.......and wasn't a humungous great plate that would restrict airflow. AL
Thanks Steve.......Well, he did it, I think, although that is the unfixed version........ I reckoned he should put a curve in the 'legs' so that they wrapped around the tubes and the plate sat lower on the tank catch plate so it could be welded to that as well........maybe he did do it. AL
No Al Darren didn't get round to getting it welded on... I think Steve B still has it.. but not Darren's 900ss worth £5000
Can anyone point me in the direction of a removeable cross member machined tonge and groove type weld on fittings like fitted to the 851's ? Or can you machine some up Steve B (904red) ? Makes perfect sense really as all flexing/cracks will stop! and you can still remove/refit the standard airbox. View attachment 11851
Hi Steve could do what you propose but l'm not sure that would solve the flex issue like a gusset would regarfs Steve B
It wouldn't stop the headstock coming away from the frame tubes either......Gusset / web is the best way to go IMO. AL
Just going by the fact that 851/888 frames with the cross member do not crack on the tubes. My X dd race bike cracked twice but since the new owner had a cross member welded in all cracking stopped.
Yeah, but.............your frame is already cracked, therefore the tube won't do much to prevent it going again....You need to bridge the welded up cracks. AL
