This is my first post in anything other than the "Introduction" section. I'll be adding a few photos of my progress and picking brains as I go. My first foray into 999 ownership came about 2 years ago, when I bought one in track day trim(STM Slipper clutch,Termi can, ohlins shock, damper, Ktech fettled front, adj rearsets, spare wheels)and converted back to road. I've admired the styling since their introduction in '03 when I was riding a '02 954 Blade. Wanted one but couldn't afford one. Picked up another '03 on Wednesday. It's in a sorry state. No front end, busted rad,oil cooler, oil cooler lugs broken off the head, broken rocker cover, pegs, bars, clutch cover, pressure plate and hub damaged, clocks, headlight housing (good one with it). Hasn't run since '05, crashed with 4k miles on it. Dry stored since. Paint is a mess on the cases. Got into it today with a bore scope and it all looks mint inside, like new. Free as a bird. No sign of moisture anywhere...which is a massive relief. I have a busy time ahead. EBay will be my friend,as will the wanted section on this forum. It'll be worth the pain to save it...I hope.
Time to get busy on that ratty looking engine. Not sure what direction to take with the frame. I'd like something different...de-lug the frame and make a naked. It would be cheaper in the long run.
Some progress. I have a rolling chassis. It's got great form. I'm swaying towards a naked build, minimalistic. Possibly a red frame with silver body work. That ugly electrics/battery holder is the only thing that will cause issue's.
Just hooking everything up to see if there's life. I'm not sure if I have the original clocks. They came with it,the LCD screen in busted but the date on the back is '05. It is possible they were changed before the crash. Fingers crossed.
So I hooked up power, fuel pump is priming, clock is sweeping, oil light, neutral light, engine management light and the little key symbol on the LCD screen along with a rapid countdown when I power on. What I thought were the original clocks just have flashing idiot lights and no LCD display. Start button does nothing to the starter relay, clutch switch is bypassed. Am I missing something to get the starter activated??
There is a good build thread turning a 999 into a Sports Classic which may be of interest if you are going naked. Personally I'd be putting the fairing back on, even if it's just Chinese while you source decent OEM.
Key symbol and countdown is indication of immobiliser looking to be programmed. You need to get around that before it’ll do anything else
On the off chance that this clock is virgin, can I try program it with the red /black key procedure? Or is this an indication of odd clocks that need to be virginized?
