Got to replace mine...well, it already had been replaced for a present, but it went wrong....tried another, but that went wrong too. So now I'm looking to get it myself, but somebody please explain to me in terms that a technophobe can understand........ What is the difference between HD Ready and Full HD? Yes, I know resolutions are 720 and 1080....is that all it is? And.....what is the difference between Freeview and Freeview HD?..... Thanks, AL.
If I may suggest A visit to Richer Sounds Their sales people seem genuinely knowledgable and helpful and will show you the difference or explain in words of one syllable that even a dunderhead such as i can understand and in my experience will not flog you the most expensive thing they can but will sell you something to do the job you need.
No Store anywhere near me unfortunately, otherwise I would have gone there first (the Colchester one appears to have gone). AL
Julian runs a great business, you can buy online too, Colchester has gone, but see here, Cambridge or Romford are your closest now. Richer Sounds - The UK's Hi-Fi, Home Cinema & Flat Panel TV Specialists!
You want full HD not HD ready. The latter are almost a "simulated" HD for when the service was first introduced.
John Lewis are also helpful or go in a Panasonic store then buy on internet for a saving Top of the range pannys are still one of the best
Cambridge Richer Sounds absolutely top people.Check out their special deals as well,I bought a really nice Panasonic just after Christmas...in stock/best price and longest warranty...
Obviously you are old enough to remember it existed.........and I'm old not to have to play it..... .....so I'm not surprised in the least it appeared.... AL
Yeah, 720 is hd ready and 1080 is full hd. I would recommend john lewis. I bought a 50" 3d samsung from them. Delivery was spot on, their own waggon, driver and co driver. The driver rang me to say he was 20 mins away and they were very polite and helpful. Also their televisions include a full 5 year guarantee. I paid about £100 more than I would have at the retail park muppets. I once bought a tv from argos for my mother @ £500, it packed up at 53 weeks old. Argos told me to do one which i did, straight to trading standards. Argos lost under the fit for purpose clause, i think its 2 years for a tv although the retail park outlets will tell you 12 months unless you pay hundreds on extra warranties. Next time anyone see's me in currys/argos etc i will be carrying a gallon of four star and a box of swan vestas. John Lewis all the way.............
Thanks Steve.............so basically HD Ready is out of date, and I therefore assume that if I got a Full HD TV it would receive ordinary Freeview as well as Freeview HD...... ....does Freeview get transmitted in HD yet? Still...at least I have found out that Digihome is Indian and there is no support; Technika is Tescos, made in Bulgaria, no support; Logik is Currys...possibly Samsung components; Cello is UK, using Chinese components.....sh*te EPG on all the range and some have a 12V power supply. LG, Samsung, and Panasonic appear to be the better ones. AL
Al, Freeview HD, the only channels that are transmitted in HD (720), are BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1, CH4 there is a rumour that a fifth HD channel is on the way, but no news as yet. 1080 (true HD) resolution is only available via Blu-Ray players - nothing is transmitted in 1080 -
And now I'm confused again.... Shall I go back to my 'kin great Toshiba VCR combo and my Freeview box?? AL
I went through this flippin' misery before christmas.... Gave up and sticking with what I have until it goes bang! I struck me it was far too easy to buy "the wrong telly!"...
It is a mine-field - my advice would be look at the samsung, panasonic or sony TV ranges and their own respected freeview HD recordable boxes (I went for the Sony system) but they're all much of a muchness - you don't mention budget or size you require but it'll probably cost you around about a bag of sand for a half-decent set-up. The really dull bit ... I recently added a 1TB hard-drive back up system for PC and recorded Freeview stuff only to find that the (freeview) data won't transfer to the Hard-Drive because it wasn't formatted - I formatted the disc via PC before backing up PC data and all was good!! Now I'm going to have to do it all again in reverse and hope that it works. PITA. Give me a video tape any day of the week!!
I don't need to hook it to a PC...my PC is for work and DucatiForum only..... And I only need a small screen....min 24" max 32".......don't want a combi.....It's them little b****ds that go wrong..... Someone has lent me DMTECH 26", but apart form the horrendous size of the surround (it's an ugly bleeder) it has no Freeview, so out come my Freeview box....guess what? ..... ....the frequencies of the remotes are that close, that the remotes affect both the box and the TV at the same time, only the wrong functions.
