I’m switching the 959 to a more dedicated track bike for this season and I’m interested to see what weight savings can be made on the bike with some simple changes. According to the Trioptions rules, Ducati state an official dry weight for the road bike of 176kg and that is the wet weight limit the series has (correction, that is just the weight with whatever fuel load), so i shall see how close to that you can get without going silly. I will record some of the items as I go, and then I will try to get a finished bike weight to see if all of the weight saving sums add up (I’ll probably have to find a standard bike to weigh to have a realistic comparison - ducati state 200kg). I will keep a running weight loss total here so it is easy to find: Euro4 exhaust swap = £500/3.8kg, so £132/kg Rear foot pegs (Euro4)= £0/0.9kg, so £0/kg Valve servo motor (Euro4) = £0/0.6kg, so £0/kg Sidestand = if you have to buy the delete plug (I had one free) £20/0.5kg, so £40/kg Switch to Renthal sprocket = £30/0.5kg, so £60/kg DB Holders front subframe (second hand) = £100/0.5kg, so £200/kg Mirrors = £0/0.7kg, so £0/kg ABS delete (at list prices, which I didn’t pay) = £386/1.0kg, so £386/kg Charcoal canister = £0/0.4kg, so £0/kg SAS delete = £35/0.2kg, so £175/kg Seat side panels = £0/0.3kg, so £0/kg Header covers = £0/0.2kg, so £0/kg Remove horn = £0/0.3kg, so £0/kg Swapping rear lights etc = £150/2.2kg, so £68/kg Swap to front race fairings = £434/3.3kg, so £132/kg Motoholders subframe = £100/2.3kg, so £43/kg Sprint P08 Filter = +0.1kg TOTAL = 17.6kg saving (wet weight 182.4kg) List of potential further savings suggested, yet not currently planned (weights not confirmed by me and are based purely upon second hand info): Lithium battery = £90/2.0kg, so £45/kg 1199/1299 tank= £600/1.0kg, so £600/kg 1199/1299 alternator/generator = £100/0.8kg, so £125/kg OZ wheels = £1860/4.5kg, so £413/kg
First change was the Euro 4 side exhaust to US959/1299 underbelly, which saved a total of 5.3kg (including rear foot pegs and valve servo): Under belly section (both 5.9kg)= 0kg Twin tail pipes (Euro4)= 3.8kg Rear foot pegs (Euro4)= 0.9kg Valve servo motor (Euro4) = 0.6kg
Depends how much you want to spend. Rear wheel is 'kin heavy. Swap the rear sub-frame for a 'racing' tyre or 1199 sub-frame. 1199 ali tank. Motoholders front sub-frame
I am going to try to keep it sensible, and although I don’t have to, roughly within Trioptions rules. Therefore wheels are off the table (two sets of aftermarket wheels is silly money anyway). I may change the subframe, but that will be after the initial build if one crops up. An 1199/1299 one is almost as light as a race one and can be found for half the price of a race one. The rear 959 tank mount can be accommodated with a little work. I already have 2 959 tanks and 1199/1299 ones are going for upwards of £600, so again I am classing this as too much for my first pass at this.
My job this evening was removing the sidestand, which believe it or not saves a surprising 0.5kg. Stand pictured with the replacement spacers and switch blanking plug:
I nearly bought it... but I had already decided that buying a third was a bit daft. I might do it in the future, but for now I’m sticking with more sensible mods (these things can get out of hand and £500 here and there soon adds up).
Lithium battery saves about 2kg. Charcoal canister about 300g ABS delete would save a fair bit I imagine the abs pump and extended hoses adds up to a fair bit
Not going with Lithium battery yet. Charcoal canister will be coming off and getting weighed, but it doesn’t look that heavy (300g sounds about right). I have HEL lines and the Bike Sport Developments ABS delete module. I have weighed all of those up and will compare to the OEM hoses and ABS pump when I remove them.
959 is 520 from factory. It has a renthal sprocket and chain on already, so I will weigh the sprockets to see the difference.
Shido battery is 642g and the standard one was just shy of 2.6kg BSD do a full evap delete kit with electronic plug to remove the valve but it’s expensive and they do an abs delete kit too
BSD module is 80g and they say the 959 ABS pump is 870g, so 790g saving. However removing the pump also deletes a lot of hoses and connections and I don’t know if they included this in their calcs. I have weighed all the new stuff going on and will weigh all the old stuff when I remove it. I got a good Black Friday deal (25% off) from BSD before Christmas so it wasn’t as eye watering.
Weight of the charcoal canister will vary on how much fuel is in the pot. When I weighed mine there was some fuel in it
Just weighed them. Standard steel is a whopping 920g and the renthal is a more reasonable 360g, so another 560g saved there.
No saving though because the 959 is 520. I guess the rental 520 chain is lighter than the OEM one, but I didn’t think to weigh them at the time.
