I have managed to lose one of the black keys from my 2004 M1000Sie. I have the other black key, the red key and the code card. I now only have one Meta alarm/immobiliser fob. What is the best way to get a replacement key and fob? Is the key "active" as web as the fob, i.e. does it have a transponder in the key? Or is the key dumb and the fob does the job?
You purchase a blank key from ducati. Take to a key cutting shop with your other black key and have it copied. Using the service manual it guides you through the process of initialising the new key transponder to your bike.
Thanks Geoffduk, what about the Meta alarm fob? I have the code card for that as well, the red plastic one.
Can anyone explain how the key and the Meta fob work together? Is the transponder in the key just for the factory immob? Does the Meta box add the alarm functions? It's not clear from the owners manual. Although it's probably just me being dim.
The keys and alarm are separate. There's no interaction between them. As you have the Red key, you can go through the key programming procedure to enable any number of black keys to start your bike. You'll just need to get a new blank key with a chip inside it (these all have codes in the chips, and it's those codes that you need to tell the bike are ok to start it!) and then get the blade cut to unlock the ignition. You don't have to go to Ducati to get a new key; other people/places can provide you with replacement keys (inc clone an existing key or a random-code chipped key) for a fraction of the price.
Two separate systems. Meta - fob enables certain functions which have been disabled by the installer. A number of relays housed within the meta alarm normally open to disable the bike if attempted theft and generates an audible siren Ducati immobiser - purely a means of disabling the bike and is a factory fitted device. No audible siren. From memory you can integrate the meta fob with the key but still two separate parts. As you have the code card for the meta maybe you can purchase one from meta.
Had my key replaced under warranty when it packed in years ago. Didn’t pay but from memory expensive just for the key so as suggested look elsewhere. If you integrate the meta with key I think they cut the transponders out of the key and place in meta fob. Quite bulky if I remember.
So can anyone recommend a source for the blank black key that I can get cut and then program? And a guide to the programming process? Is it possible to temporarily disable the Meta so that you can start the bike with just the key?

Just done the first step, ordered a replacement fob from Abacus Car Alarms pre-programmed with the Meta alarm code, £50.00. Now need to find a key blank with chip....any suggestions?
See my reply above. Avanti offer a full key service at a great price whilst ducati only offer a blank key. avanti cheaper but personally I hate posting things Incase they get lost so i would purchase blank from avanti if available and source a local company to cut new key. Follow programming procedure and problem fixed. avanti take care of everything but i would never post all keys to anyone in case they get lost. Just me from experience.
If it’s of any interest and purely academic here’s the annoying chip your transponder communicates with - especially if it keeps immobilising. In the process of fixing some parts of my cluster and replace faulty rpm motor along with some other things and need to identify some parts. May do a separate write up sometime in the future.

Thanks for that, I will look at Avanti, although I have just found a blank on Ebay with chip for £20 - just not sure how it will be coded to my existing key - they say "cloneable"
Anybody had any dealings with Avanti recently? Just tried to call them but it went to voicemail. I wanted to check that their key copying service was still available and still £45.
Don’t know how they can clone it without your existing key to copy the code. Your using the red key to clone the new through the process described in the manual so would imagine you use the same process. Can’t imagine if by magic you place next to the red key and it’s done. Avanti offer a full clone ie cut and clone transponder for £ 45 which I’d opt for. You need to send the key.
Thanks Geoffduk, I was a bit dubious as well, I would prefer to send the black key to Avanti, although a full copy is now £45 according to their website. Couldn't get them on the phone just now though.
Got a blank key cut to a photo of an existing key by Express Keys and Lock Services, 29 High St, Orpington BR6 6BG Phone: 01689 850008. Their website is down at the moment so I hope that doesn't mean that they've gone out of business. Mine was just a dumb key, no chip (just wanted a spare to open panniers and fuel cap whilst transponder key for my 1260 stays in my pocket) and was, ISTR, £15 delivered. They could probably do you one with a chip in it that you can then introduce to your bike using the red key and the procedure in the manual. It was delivered within a few days of sending a pic of one of my existing key blades via email.
This part important regarding the eBay key Most Automotive locksmiths have the ability to cut & CLONE the chip data from your key to this item. The transponder key needs to be cut and CLONED by the end user. As it’s blank and you have the red key I see no reason why you can’t program it yourself using the bike as it has a transponder enclosed. It would obviously remove the need to post the key but then you need to add key cutting to price. probably worth trying though.
Yes, I see, obviously would be nice not to have to send the key away - I'll wait to see if I get a reply from Avanti first - but if not I guess I could get it copied locally and then clone the key myself with the bike and the red key. I haven't read up on the procedure yet but (famous last words) how hard can it be?
