Backstop is simply to divert pressure from Eu insisting on a hard border (and bad press that goes with it) and to tie U.K. into paying fees forever as it will not be bullied into allowing NI to lose its links to U.K. sovereignty
Paul, by default there must be a hard border. That is the legal position is it stands at this time. The only thing which can make that change is for the U.K. to agree a deal with the EU. At the moment, we can’t even a agree a deal amongst ourselves, so it's wrong to blame this in the EU
So the GFA makes it illegal (or impossible) to exit Europe? That’s what you and others are now saying.
Unless you are 1) an Irish Republican, the more militant of whom gave up their weapons. Or 2) a citizen of Ireland, which change its constitution as part of the GFA. Otherwise, yeah, it’s no biggy
Btw it’s not U.K. that won’t do a deal. Eu simply won’t move on its core principles, which is understandable as then half of Europe would quickly exit. So that’s not UK, that’s Eu. Or are you and others suggesting U.K. break up and pass sovereignty of NI to Eite, or NI becomes its own country without links to the union ala Eire?
It is Remainder "pretzel logic" at play here. If the EU won't agree to a deal that makes an Irish "hard border" unnecessary, the UK can only leave the EU by effectively tearing up the GFA - they say. Thus Brexiteers are "ignoring the problem" at best, or "care nothing" for a return to the criminal behaviour and murdering that went on prior to the GFA, at worst. Now, to the normal thought process, this scenario is frankly disgusting. Any far-minded individual will reject it as it is entirely evil thinking. However, as leaving the EU is also (equally?) evil to a Remainder, the argument that the UK cannot leave the EU because of the GFA seems reasonable to them. You can avoid any "wrong-doing" simply by cancelling Brexit (so they think). This end-justifies-the-means thinking, prevalent amongst extreme Remainders in the UK (and incidentally, amongst extreme Democrats and Never-Trumpers in the US). is quite the modern phenomenon. It is truly an eye-opener and it is a reaction to the increasing awareness amongst normal folk of how politics has been quietly conducted for the past two decades or so. It is a contest between folk who cling to The Narrative and people who smell a rat.
That has always been the case should the U.K. not been able to establish a free trade deal with the EU. I think you need to be considering the over promising and under delivery of the Vite Leave campaign which promised that a free trade deal with the EU would be quick and easy. Clearly, it hasn’t been and that “Project Fear” has proven to be “Project Accurate”
The eu relied on the backstop stopping brexit but the charade is now being seen. The whole point of the back stop is to allow the eu to stop the U.K. from doing well once on it's own two feet (which is inevitable) so as to continue to fear to other countries who want to leave. It has little to do with harmonising if the first thing the eu will do if they do not get their own way is to bully the republic into putting up a hard border in their side. This is tosh of course as what happens on the Irish side is down to how much of the gfa the eu will insist the irish government ignore as we on the U.K. side will have kept to the gfa by NOT having a hard border. You can try and fool yourself as much as you want with your circles but the only one saying a hard border will be necessary, is the eu and this is the clearest example to the people of Ireland, why the uk wants to leave the bullying eu
Paul, we are no longer have an empire or rule the waves. Where does this sense of entitlement come from where you expect the EU to treat us differently from other countries it has borders with? We are leaving. The EU don’t want us to leave When we leave, we lose our membership benefits as well as our membership obligations. You can’t expect to keep the benefits while not contributing your 35 pence per day. My cat costs me more than that in food and vets bills What about NATO, how much money do we send there? To the NATO beaurocrats in Brussels. You know, the others that are also not elected? Are we going to leave that as well?
I have to disagree. If we were to leave on 29th March on WTO terms, there will be an acceleration of a new trade agreement with the EU to protect them from the recession that's looming for the Eurozone. £85 billion trade surplus and the release of the £39 billion settlement to the EU will focus their minds and perform miracles. Or am I just a blind optimist? If we go out on the present May deal, the negotiations will be drawn out for years and we'll be in an awful negotiating position having already settled financially. Even the fishing industry will be shafted. I favour 4-6 chaotic months for the ultimate benefits.
There belies the perfect remainer irony. We in the U.K. have used democracy and our democratic right for a voice in that vote to leave the eu, who I may point out that after the u.s. china and russia, the eu is probably the biggest empire builder, you should look more at what they are upto in south america and africa We send the required gdp as needed by nato, something most of europe does not, as it seeks to undermine nato in favour of a eu army. Give you an example, interpol and europol.
does anyone know what it’s going to cost us to design and deploy our own sat Nav GPS satellite system? Or set up our own medicines standards agency?
We have one, the American gps system, even europeans use it. Gallileo is typical eu mantra of scrap what the world does, our empire demands our own ( apart from the fact it cannot operate as it needs two key stations, on the falklands and the ascension islands which are both british dependencies ). look it up As to medicines, I thought we already had The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) ?
Mays deal is a bad deal. Worst of both worlds. I am afraid you are overly optimistic about getting a deal sorted out quickly after a WTO exit. Why are German car companies the most successful in the world? Do you think that they cannot engineer 5% cost out of their cars to cover an import tax and still maintain their profit margin? Porsche make more money per car than any other manufacturer. When we had recession in the 90s Porche made things like electric windows and air con an optional extra in order to be more competitive. They reduced the spec. YOur average German car business executive does not careif I get sat Nav as standard in my next company car. He really doesn’t. About half the cars bought new are company cars. I have worked for a big German manufacturing company and they thought Bexit was unfortunate and it would bring some logistical changes but commercially they were not bothered. An import duty will be less than typical changes in exchange rate. For that they have to use the futures market for planning, an import duty is much easier to deal with
Exactly!!! People need to wake up, open their eyes, and not be such Pusey's - the big business project fear attack yesterday was quite simply appalling and disrespectful by a handful of multi millionaires, and people fear the crap they spout Our company can't even find one good design or tooling engineer, where are Boeing going to replace the skill set if they move their UK factory - are they going to take it all with them - that will be a cheap option or recruit and train ridiculous. If she really believed what she was spouting she needs sacking
