M1100s Questions

  1. I added this little baby to the stable on Friday and have a few questions please.

    1. Does anyone have a link to a downloadable workshop manual for the M1100S (09MY)? I've searched high and low on the internet and can't find anything. Even Haynes don't have one.

2.The end cans aren't AFAIK original. They're Termis but would/should the ECU have been reprogrammed at the same time as they were fitted? If so, how can I tell? Reason for asking is that a) slow speed fuelling is awful and she really stutters & struggles in first/second at low revs in traffic, and,
    b) whenever the throttle is shut off, after acceleration or cruising at c4.500 rpm and above there is the most amazing spits, burps and backfires from the exhaust. It sounds great, don't get me wrong, but my gut says it shouldn't be as it is. I wouldn't be surprised if I were following the bike to see flames spit out of the exhausts :D.

    3. It is a UK bike, came from NI, thus the speedo is in miles and mph. Is it possible to reset the dash to record/display in Km? I can't believe Ducati have 2 types of dash an imperial one and a metric one, so I'm guessing it must be just a s/ware set up.

    TIA.

  2. May be of some help?

My 1100 Evo was awful when I first bought it secondhand, the belts were too loose and adjusting them to the right tension with the cam wheel locked in correct position made quite a difference, then fitting O2 eliminators made a further improvement! It now rides pretty smoothly at around 3000RPM

I'm sure your dash can show either MPH or KPH have you checked the manual.

Popping and banging may improve with a TPS reset and checking the balance is right; assuming there are no air leaks?

    Haven't found a manual yet.

  3. 1. I bought my M1100S CDrom manual off eBay.
    2. The cans are not original but are a DP extra. They were sold with a different ecu and filter I believe.
I have Titanium Termi slip ons which still have cats in them which, I am told, don’t need a different ecu.
Mine crackle and spit on overun. Lovely.
I have O2 eliminators which smoothed out the jerkiness around 3k rpm.
    3. Dunno. Divide everything by 5 and multiply by 8.

Additional info: get rid of them brake calipers, they’re shite!

    Enjoy!

  4. 1. Thanks I’ll check that out
    2. On starting up the dash reads ‘M1100S Racing UK’ so, in your opinion would this imply the ÉCU was changed or do they all read ‘...racing’ just to make you feel good ?
    3. It’s bloody hard to keep dividing everything by 5 then multiplying by 8 when the world is whizzing past at warp speed. I know, I’ve tried. ;)

Thanks for the responses though. :upyeah:

  5. I did read the manual from beginning to end but I’ll check it again. Cheers :upyeah:

  6. Recommended replacements?

  7. If on startup the display says “Racing” then it is either the ECU for the slip on Termis or the ECU for the full race exhaust system. I suspect you have the correct ECU for your Termis. The only definite way to tell is to check the part number on the ECU.

Low rev behaviour (below 4000rpm) is fairly poor. You should be having to slip the clutch up to about 20mph. There are several ways that you can improve things:
    1) change the gearing. 14T front sprocket is the most common alteration, but you could go up two on the rear instead.
    2) remap the ECU. There are a few places that can do this. This can also eliminate the exhaust value and ignore the O2 sensors. Done well you should get a bike that is smooth down to 3000rpm or even less.
    3) fit O2 sensor eliminators. This will improve the fuelling at low revs and prevents the engine running very lean at low revs in order to pass emissions regs.

Changing the display from miles to km is detailed in the owners manual.

You will also find some knowledgeable Monster folk on the U.K. Monster Owners Club forum if you don’t get all the help you need here (which you probably will).

  8. Nice pick up Paul.

  9. 4 pad P4 calipers as fitted to 749R/999, Aprilia RSV, BMW S1000. They are a direct replacement and you don’t need new hoses.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  10. If I remember correctly the slip on carbon Termis and ECU also came with a freer flowing air filter. The only way to know if that is what you have is to check the part number on it.

Pops and bangs from the exhaust do happen. Especially in my experience when closing the throttle from having been on a constant throttle setting for a while. In my experience it happens much more at significant altitude (above 1000m).

  11. @RickyX @SunEye thanks.
I have to change the belts on it anyway as they’re >2 yrs old but <3000 miles now. The dealer (non-Ducati) I bought it from did service it prior to sale but I told them to leave the belts coz I’ll do them. Then I can use ExactFit and know they’re done right plus it gives me chance to acquaint myself with it. At that time I’ll check out the air filters and the ECU PNs.

Personally I love the pops & bangs from the exhaust system it was just a bit of a surprise to me as my MY99 748 has a Termi system complète with ÉCU upgrade and doesn’t do that at all. It’s even better at low speed sub 3000rpm than the Monster and it’s 10yr older technology.

Thanks all for the advice. Please keep it coming and I’ll check out the UK MOC.

  12. The reasons the Monster 1100 runs so badly at low revs is due to emissions regulations. The fact that it is newer technology actually enables it to run very lean to meet the regulations. The best thing you can do is get the ECU remapped so that the engine behaves how it was designed it, not how it had to be restricted in order to meet the noise and emissions regulations.

  13. Thanks. I am thinking of taking it to a dyno place to get it remapped but, having only just got it, wanted to check out what was 'normal' first of all. My old Montster (MY96 M900) never behaved like that, but then it "only" had carbs!. The only issue (mine and mine alone) is that the nearest dyno place to me is in Dublin - a 4.5hr ride each way:confused: and that's by motorway:(. I guess I'll have to try and make a weekend of it.

One further question please. Is there a Cat on these models? If so, I can't see an obvious one in the system. TIA

  14. There are not many places that can reprogram the Siemens ECU on the M1100. I know that CJS, Cornerspeed and BSD in England can. Neil at Cornerspeed can reflash the ECU if you post it to him. It’s not as perfect as if you dyno the bike and reprogram the ECU based on numerous dyno runs, but it’s probably more than 95% good enough and will cost a lot less. There are quite a few Monster owners that have had their ECU reflashed by post and I haven’t heard anyone complain about the resultant performance of their bike.

I believe that the catalytic converters on the M1100 (like some other Ducatis) is in the standard exhaust cans. Therefore when you put the slip on Termis on you also get rid of the cat at the same time.

  15. To add to this:
The Titanium Termi slip ons have the catalytic converters in them. I don’t believe the carbon ones do.

  16. Thanks for the responses guys :upyeah:

  17. By way of update for anyone else who may read this thread in the future and have similar questions.
    Referencing post #1 above.

    1. I got a manual from classicmanuals_45 on Ebay. An HTML version so I can simply jump to whatever section I want easy-peasy. Great service too. Just 3.39 and I got the link to download within a few hrs of buying.

    2. Still a work in progress but I just :heart::heart::heart::heart: the noise she makes when rolling off the throttle:D:D so I may just live with it :upyeah:

    3. There's no mention in the Owners Handbook of how to change the dash from miles to Km, nor surprisingly, in the Ducati Workshop Manual, but here's how to do it in case anyone wants to change theirs when riding abroad.

    i) Hold the 'Mode' button in the up position - position A, insert the key and turn on the ignition. The dash will remain blank rather than go through it's usual cycle and then will display as below then release the Mode switch.
    IMG_0088.jpg
ii) Push the Mode switch up until the display reads:
    IMG_0089.jpg

iii) Now press and hold the switch down until the display reads US then release.
iv) Now keep pressing and releasing the Mode switch down until it gets to EU (or UK if going vice versa). Note it will cycle through UK, US, EU, JAP, CAN, FRA - you can work out for yourself which markets those are.

    IMG_0090.jpg

    v) Once on the desired setting hold the Mode switch down until the display reads as below when you then release the Mode switch.
    IMG_0091.jpg

vi) Now turn the key to the 'off' position and the next time you turn it on it will be in Km/kph/Celsius as opposed to Miles/mph/celsius.
    IMG_0092.jpg

    Job done. :upyeah:

Edit: It also must change the fuel injection settings as it now accelerates to 100 WAYYYY QUICKER than it used to :p

  18. I had one of these from new. Fantastic bike (wish I'd not sold it), pulled like a Saturn V, but quite difficult to ride smoothly in 30 zones, so I swapped the front sprocket for a 14T and that really helped, and made it even more torquey!

  19. 14T sprocket is obligatory!
Good info on how to set the dash.

  20. @Snips @RickyX I pulled the front sprocket cover off today and lo and behold there's already a 14T sprocket fitted, yet 1st/2nd gear below 20mph is so snatchy/jerky I'm constantly having to slip the clutch. I guess a dyno/ecu flash is on the cards or I live with it as 'normal'.

Also 8k rpm seems low for the rev limiter to kick in, why's the tacho go up to 12k? Stock parts, used across many different bikes? I know max torque is c6.5k and max bhp c.7.5k but it just feels like it could go further up the rev range. Having said that, compared to my 748 the torque of the M1100S is out of this world. Whatever gear I'm in it's just twist and go :D
