In getting acquainted with my new (to me) Monster I decided to use it, rather than the van, to run an errand yesterday. The roads were damp but drying and the forecast was no rain; but hey, this is the West of Ireland, and on the return journey it developed into what we call ‘a soft day’ here. The result was, what you see in the attached photos. Both the back of the bike and the back of my jacket got drenched and covered in cack from the road. So, I'm thinking I need to extend the rear carbon hugger somehow. Has anyone else experienced these problems and can offer some suggestions please? The pic below shows the hugger as it is (zoom in) and IMO it's no different to the hugger on my 748 but I don't experience the same issue with that. TIA.
I had the same problem, there is a guard you can get that fits on the tail tidy. I’ll look for the link
Yes, but he’s a bit big to go on the back. SWMBO weighs much less. Edit. BTW, we don’t want to tether him but we have a few acres that are impractical to fence in and he, and our Labrador, believe the lane that runs past our house is their territory. Despite the fact he’s a big softy the fact is he’s big and when he runs out onto the lane, to protect ‘his’ territory, anyone out there goes ‘OMG it’s going to eat me!’ When all he wants is to be loved.
My monster 1200 was the worst! I made a little guard from hdpe sheet that I had lying around and it worked really well but looked a bit funny. Meh!
Cool, I like it. It looks better than the bit of corrugated steel I’m probably likely to nail to the number plate unless anyone can suggest something more sophisticated!
Might sound daft, but where a rucksack - that'll keep your jacket clean anyway! Otherwise, a Multistrada style crud catcher would work - not sure how you'd fit it though. It's something I find to be terrifically annoying too!
Thanks. I don't have the original one if what's fitted is not original. The bike is new to me - just 2 weeks now. Usually I wouldn't be out in the wet but got caught out the other day. Would you, or anyone, have a pic of what the original should look like. Also, for what it's worth, I was contemplating replacing the current number plate for something akin to @laava 's above but that will just exacerbate the problem should I get caught out again. I'm also looking into a retro-fit crud catcher a'la MTS/Scrambler but not sure how that would look in the flesh on the bike.
The Hyper does the same thing. I run a top box on the back to carry my bag and rain gear to the office and back and that catches all the crud, but take it off and get caught in the wet and it's the same problem. I do like @laava 's solution! Must give that a try.
Just to round this off, and thanks to @duke63 for point it out, it appears the previous owner of my M1100S has fitted a neat Tail Tidy, which I don't intend to replace with the original part as indicated by Duke. So, until I can get some suitable material and knock up something like the @laava solution, Intend to purchase a cheap but washable jacket that I can put over my leathers and then if I get caught again, I'll just chuck it in the wash. Either that or only ride in the dry.
