Now for my first Duke build

  1. :-( how crap
You will have to get another smiley

  2. i would go with that ,i have spent a weekend striping a frame and its hard work, your local powder coaters will just strip it for you for a small fee and mybe prime it as well ,and you can always paint it yourself

  3. Had abit play today and with four bolts the air box was out with a tangle of wires, i was impressed so much was attached to the air box. Abit of mess so will see what i need to go back in and possibly improve the setup in time.

Found one plate which has had some abuse at some point, does anyone know what attaches? When ive looked at pics of half faired versions it appears. Is it the attachment for full fairings?

As previously mentioned i think im going to build it and then strip and powdercoat the frame, there is alot of brackets that im not sure if im going to need so going to see when i build what will be hacked off during and at the end. I dont want to make a mistake and have to weld bits back on. The big one will be the rear frame but will get the seat unit first and then see what point will be chopped.

I seem to have 900 wheels with double front discs, im going to use what i have in forks etc until money is available to change wheels and forks. Cant wait to get an engine and get the frame sat on top:biggrin:

Hoping to get some bits at various jumbles this year aswell, i think im also after an early 900 with white frame in the future.

  4. You're right, the split bracket is for the fairing, it's usual for them to get bent or busted if a bike goes down the road. It's not structual so get it bent staight and welded up! The only odd thing is the two holes, not something I remember?

  5. RE Engine

I would definitely go 1000 DS , engine in standard form is far superior to a highly tuned 900 version . I'd also try to use fuel injection as again it produces good low speed running as we'll as good (for a 2 valver ) top end power . Try and buy a motor with injection system , clocks and ecu with ignition switch and key , coz the immobiliser system can be a pain in arse . There are ways round it but it can end up expensive if you don't know the right people. It you want a DS motor just check the valve guides before you buy as the fix for a wobbly valve can be £300 per head .
If in doubt check out the dyno charts below , and remember its a std bike with legal exhausts vs tuned bike .

  6. If its for a full fairing then it will be coming off, pity its on the half fairing i think the frame would look cleaner with it off.

  7. My current inspiration, there was a follow up article in performance bikes but i dont seem to be able to find it.

  8. Niceeee...

  9. Waiting for the right engine now so thinking about its style......... i was wondering to put it back as standard but after i slapped myself abit and the inspiration from the Pantah project (worship) im liking the tail units from radical ducati but is there much swapping around for the SS tanks allowed? will it have to be a 600ss tank to fit the frame?

Got a letter from DVLA who have registered the V5 application, just need to wait.

  10. Depends how far you want to go I guess, but probably most tanks can be made to fir most frames, eg I know a 996 and 851 tank will fit an early style monster, and looking at some of the DD bikes the are all sorts of mis math between SS frames too.

I like the idea of the false tank top, with a alli tank underneath.

  11. I was thinking about a false tank, not sure if the ss tank is the style that i want

  12. Depends how much money you have...if its false you can get what you want made, and have an ugly as Cherie Blair alli one under. The one in the pic above I think is a false tank with alli under, Senna has his race bike like that and it does look good

  13. Cheers for that, i think if i go for another tank it needs to look like it was always ment to be and not just stuck on top.

  14. V5 came through today...............sorted got my sights on a couple of engines now!

  15. Been and visited a potential engine today, i did take the frame to check fit etc but ive ended up leaving it due to not sure if there was enough clearance for the shock. It seemed very tight with the top of the frame but was a spot on fit for the engine bolts.

The plan is to go back with the shock and swing arm.

    Its a 94 monster 900 engine, my frame is a 94 600SS.

He had a 750ss engine but wasnt quite as snug a fit with the engine bolts and probably would need spacers.

Im abit concerned if the engine bolts will support a 900 engine rather than a 600, it looked massive and pretty heavy.

  16. I thought the Frames were common to all 3 SS models? would be interested to know as I've got something similar in mind..

Good luck with your build :upyeah:

  17. Correct! all 600 750 900 frames are the same. :upyeah:

  18. Cheers Imola, thought so
I'd be on the lookout for a damaged Multistrada - use the engine, injection, loom, instruments etc and sell the rest as parts.

I reckon the 1000DS is a great road engine. Mine had Performance ECU and Termis and although not as strong as the VTR Honda I owned previously, would be fab in a lightweight Cafe racer.

There is an SS frame with V5 on the bay at the moment at £80 with no bids...
