@Kevin Tallant why the dislike Kevin , did I say something wrong? I thought that was the case, or so someone told me. Maybe it's 'fat thumb' syndrome, heaven knows I do that frequently and have to correct it

Not going on Falloon's account. The second sentence quoted would prohibit changing internals just for the few racing specials. The internals had to be the same as the homologation model , which for 1998 was the SPS. Again from Falloon at 197: "With the the small number of modifications allowed by World Supersport regulations, the 748SP was upgraded to the 748SPS for 1998. Still in yellow, it was closer to the 916 SPS than the earlier SP in the use of the new 25CrMo4 frame, titanium con-rods, and new brake calipers. The rear brake and clutch lines were now braided steel, and the engine had bronze valve guides. Other alterations were to the ignition pick-ups and regulator, but general engine specifications were unchanged from the 748SP. The 748SPS still used the '1.6' CPU. As tested by Moto Sprint in January 1998, the 748SPS achieved 249.4km/h (155mph) and produced 97.68bhp at 10,800rpm at the rear wheel; this was very little different from the 250.778km/h the Italian magazine Super Wheels had managed from a 748SP in April 1997" [OT - but heard of this marketing ploy following on from changes after the '96 TPG buyout? "It was obvious that TPG was now committed to raising the profile of Ducati beyond its previous boundaries. One way of doing this was by creating a special edition silver 748L (with carbon fibre front mudguard and chainguard) to be sold through the prestigious Neima Marcus catalogue for men in the United States, Only 100 were available, and with a Donna Karan New York Leather Jacket and Dainese gloves provided, this became the first mail-order Ducati".]
“Very rare” https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-V...498545?hash=item2f2d1f7271:g:GvsAAOSwlS1chOR2 my arse ! Andy
To be fare, XXX stamped factory pre production bikes are very rare and in the future will be worth loads going by the CB750 Pre Prod bike that sold for £130K + a year or so ago!
Don’t start that again, it’s one of the bikes used by Ducati for bike shows and press pictures. It will fair no better (and more likely worse) than the Superleggera XXXX bikes that escaped the factory. Andy
History dictates otherwise though, that is all I am saying - the CB750 was a 'Press Bike' (not even a prototype) and it sold for £130K+ so explain that?
