I have standard 4 pad radial calipers on my 749R. I have been using Bendix MRR pads and I find them to be rather excellent - great feel and awesome stopping power. Big question: is there any merit in "upgrading" these calipers and fitting the newer "monoblocks" off a 1098S/1198? I see that the 1098 calipers do not have 4 pads per caliper - are they any better than the 4 pad ones that I already have? Note: this question is partially to do with fashion...also, I could put the 749R calipers on my M1100S (since those brakes are shocking!) Cheers, R
I wouldn't upgrade personally, the 4 pad calipers are great and prove plenty of feel, I find the monoblocks more like a switch if I am honest not something I overly enjoy... but a combination of pads and master cylinder would possibly overcome this, but that's more £££
I wouldn't bother if its performance alone your after. I had an 06 999R and I found the brakes excellent to say the least. I now have the 1098R with mono blocks which are also excellent but comparing the two there aint much in it.
Petty much a I thought then. I am very happy with the standard 749R set up - especially with the pads I am using and the HEL 2 line hoses I have. I was just thinking if it was worth the bother I could kill two birds with one stone and upgrade to monoblocks on the 749 and chuck the R brakes on the M1100... Might just go for some R calipers for the Monster then..or not. Thanks for the comments anyway. R
I found my P4 calipers better tbh than my std 848 radial ones, altho the evo ones are better...but not a lot
Std 848 calipers are the same as the M1100 I think - they are TERRIBLE! More wooden than Michael Caine's acting!!
Pads help a lot, but the monoblocks are loads better without being as harsh as the 1098 mb's....I always found the other ones to have loads of feel but if you went emergency stop type braking it was back to the bar. Until I changed the pads.
I kept the std calipers on my 999R and find them excellent. I change the master cyclinder for a forged Brembo jobby, put good pads in and purge regularly. That in combination woth some sticky SC2's are good enough fir me. I have the monoblock's on my Streetfighter S and they are very very good but wouldn't upgrade on the 999.
