1299 Chain Fouling Swingarm

  1. What’s the deal with this? I’ve seen a thread relating to it before but what’s the reasoning behind it? Chain slack okay a role? Or is the lateral movement nothing to do with it?

  2. Seen this only once before on an 899. Front sprocket had been fitted arse ways around. Has it been off recently?

  3. No it’s not been off. Thing is after I read about it ages ago I can’t remember if I checked to see what mine was like but it’s usually what I’d do so I’m thinking it was ok back when I checked. Thing is my chain when measured at the tightest spot is within tolerance, and that’s if a slack chain would contribute to it but I’m thinking the slack bits in the chain might be too slack and the chain is needing replaced.

  4. Tight spots are an issue but still annoying that it's hit the swing arm like that. Hope you get it sorted.

  5. Pretty sure it was a warranty/ recall issue? Looks like my 2017 1299 has an extra bit machined away on the swing arm to provide more clearance

  6. Check the chain slider hasn't worn away. Should be checked at service and do wear. I change them out regularly, not a big or expensive job.

  7. +1.
Mine was doing that at 15k miles with the original chain. @nelly fitted a new chain and sprockets and replaced that slider too. All is good now.

  8. As mentioned above, I had exactly the same wear on an 899 and the whole swingarm was replaced under warranty. The new swingarm has a small bit machined where the chain rubs, and looks exactly like the picture above, just a bit neater :joy: . If it doesn't get done under warranty by a dealer, just get the dremel out.

  9. Mine was addressed by GT's at 7k service not sure on what they did or whether it still does !

  10. Had this happen on my 1299S a couple thousand miles from new.
Reported and questioned dealer many times and never received an acceptable explanation.

  11. This references my 899 which has a double sided swingarm, but I assume the fix is the same... See if you can spot the difference.

After a complete swingarm replacement with new 'modified' swingarm
