Although i really like my 1198S ,and when its running and i'm riding it it feels almost sublime, i'm starting to get a bit miffed with the random starting from cold...when its warm it usually starts okay but most of the time from cold it struggles ,coughing wheezing and spluttering before eventually firing. I fitted a bigger battery upgrade as recommended on here earlier in the year and it did help a bit ,but not enough to make me feel the bike will start reliably every time i open the garage doors...i will be getting a set of exact start cables shortly off @Exige hopefully they will make a bit more difference , i'm also gonna get it booked in to get the TPS properly set up with my local indie in the very near future...i never had these probs with my old T9 it always started on the button every time, can any of you more knowledgeable types offer any other tips /advice on getting it to start more reliably? ...apart from whats described above.
The dealer I bought it from said to open the throttle slightly when pressing the button from cold, not tried this yet ...doesn't mention it in the manual, does anyone do this with theirs?
Mate I had endless trouble with my 1198, spent about 3k on it replacing everything!! Still had trouble with it. Do NOT use throttle !!! quickest way to knacker your sprag clutch
My 1098s was a poor starter. It seemed to turn over nicely but just wouldn't fire up. Brand new battery fitted didnt make a difference. I read the fault codes. and it said Coils, injectors and CPS Fitted different coils an CPS dudnt make difference (also fitted new relay first Log story short The Sprag was worn Even though it seemed to turnover nicely it was taking that much elektrickery it was depriving the ECU hence the faults Now I only have to walk in the garage and look at it and it starts
Before you do anything fit Exige's cables That and a new battery worked wonders on mine. The stock battery cables are shit, they are ok when the bike is new but they degrade badly over time. Cold start on a cold day and it can be a little reluctant, but it always fires if not in the fiirst then the second try.
The Exige kit is really worth it. I had symptoms similar to how you describe it on my old 749s and it used to be lethargic on the starter and never seemed to want to get going... the ExactStart cables did the trick and it used to turn over faster and more positively. I'd imagine Adam will have a few tricks up his sleeve though, don't lose heart. It's a gorgeous bike!
Thanks for the replies chaps...Not really losing heart Ian , i know relationships with these italian beauty's can be a love and hate one ,its just that all my experience with them up to know has been a LOVE one, not really had the hate side of things.....i'm sure i'll get it sorted for the summer, if we get one!
Just ordered a cable kit from Stu ,i'll be fitting it asap and see what difference it makes, i'm told they are a pretty straightforward swap but if i get stuck with the installation i'm sure some of you lads will point me in the right direction. ...my spannering skills leave a lot to be desired.
Instructions and completeness of the set I got for the 749 was outstanding. Right down to emery paper and dialectic grease.
To be honest the cables i had off stu made no difference to my bike though they were very well made and easy to fit.
TPS reset and having the bike mapped up (power commander but can get ECU flashed) sorted all my cold/hot starting issues.
I thought yours was relatively trouble free. Seems not - guess they all are a little temperamental. Mine has been nothing but trouble really, but it has now done 26k miles. When it works though, everything is forgiven.....
Exige's cables arrived yesterday, they will be fitted all being well over the weekend, i have ridden the bike a few times this week in the nice weather and I have to say all has been Ok on the starting front ,opening the throttle wide then snapping it shut before pressing the button seems to help for some reason, also stopped for petrol a coupla times and it restarted as normal with no bother....I Agree with @Pavey when you're on board and all's well you can forgive them almost anything...
Yeah it never actually let me down but i was forever spending money on it and I fell out of love with it so it was time for a change.
Fitted the cables yesterday and put the fairings back on this morning then went to get a tenners worth of Esso Super, bike feels like its on steroids compared to before, started on the button with quicker and stronger cranking , paid for the juice and somehow i knew it wouldnt be a problem restarting it and it wasnt, i'd always wondered in the past if it would start after filling up, due to a couple of occasions when it got stroppy with me and proved reluctant to fire, almost draining the battery...early days and maybe its my imagination but the bike feels different in a positive way, can't quite put my finger on it but i'm not complaining.
Had/have the exact same feeling with mine, was always a gamble if it would fire again, despite running fine pre fuel stop. There would be no logic to it either, which made it all the more annoying.
Have you got the upgraded cables fitted?...if not its worth a try ,they seem to have made a difference on mine.
