an easy MTS question...

  1. Can you turn the headlights on if you don't have the key with you?My bike has just got stolen today and the Securıty camera shows the thief turning the light on before he breaks the steering lock.

  2. Moved to Multistrada

  3. What year bike?

  4. It is 2012 1200 Standart ABS

  5. Without a key or pin code nothing should work, if the thief turned lights on he must have had one or the other. this would raise the question as to how secure is the hands free system from cloning and should be sent to Ducati to answer.

  6. By linking certain circuits, available at the fuse box, it's definitely possible to turn on the dash. Whether this would enable an engine start I don't know.

  7. When you press the recovery button on the tank, prior to entering PIN, the dash and the lights will come on. Won't do anything else until PIN is entered, but in answer to your question, yes you can turn the lights on without the key

  8. what if pin is not set, it can be started?

  9. No. There has to be a PIN setup and entered. The bikes are supplied in a virgin state and should be set up by the owner on collection from the dealer. Once set, then the bike will only start upon it being correctly entered.

  10. Sorry to hear man!

  11. How many owners change the PIN after collecting the bike from the dealer? I'm not going to say what the dealer told me they use as a default setting but if they all do the same it's not exactly difficult to suss out.

  12. Should be part of the handover process that the PIN is set up with the customer. There's no need at all for the dealer to enter one prior to that. On a used bike, it can be reset and the same process done with the new owner.
If its a used bike from a non dealer then that is more difficult, but its not too had to get it reset and sorted.
ive heard a few stories abut PIN's being quite obvious and tbh, that's crazy. It takes minutes and at the end of the day it's the bikes security that's at risk.

  13. When I collected mine I was told that they'd set it to **** and then went on to explain how to change it. Apparently the dealer sets it during the PDI because it cuts down on the handover time when you collect the bike and the factory default setting is even more obvious.

  14. Factory default is "----".... It has to be set to something to make it work. In the time they show you how to change it, they could've let you enter your own number in.

  15. Dealer had set mine up with p**s easy number. They showed me how to change and I ran through it a couple of times at home with the manual And changed it . Very easy to change number so don`t understand why peeps don`t (if they haven`t).
I ran through the emergency start procedure as well just for my own peace of mind.
As stated above lights can come on with no key.
Very sorry for nicked bike. Gits should be strung up end of.

  16. Surely the dealer will need to set it to something as part of the PDI and start-up/road test before handing it over to the customer?

I'm not sure if I'd like the thought of picking up a brand new bike that hasn't at least been started and/or ridden round the block!

  17. I would have thought if he had a pin or 'cloned' key then wouldn't need to break steering lock
Good luck on catching the thieving bastards and getting yr bike back :O

  18. If you have the key, then there's no need for a PIN. The bike can be started, PDI'd and tested. The PIN is incase you lose a key as a "get you home" measure. There's only one person should know the PIN and that's the owner hence it being done at handover....

  19. Ok, makes sense - from your previous reply I misunderstood that the bike wouldn't run without a PIN being set, key or no key!

This suggests that whoever stole the bike used the recovery PIN and broke the steering lock? It would be interesting to find out from the OP if they had set their own PIN or if the dealer/previous owner delivered it with a PIN already set and it was unchanged...

  20. If the electric handsfree lock was in use it would unlock when the dash switched on after entering the pin code, so no need to break the steering lock.
