You say it's the "PA6" marked tanks that are the real problem - is it easy to tell if one of these is fitted to a 2010 1198S???
Yes, set it a light and it will smell of Nylon, or check the underside where it will have a PA6 logo moulded in, either will work fine
Not sold yet fella, to be fair it’s at ducati John’s in Leeds getting new belts, or can be sold cheaper with the belts included to fit, cheers exige yes I think it’s a great buy but buyers dictate, as a side note I would have bought the belts off you but I got them thrown in with the deal.... op I had the 848 x2 and it was a great road bike plenty of go but if you are used to a beemer probably wouldn’t impress ha....never rode my 1198 and won’t so cannot comment I know it’s too daunting for me.
I had the Beemer from new, and plenty of quick 4 cylinder 1000's before. But over the last 10 years it's definitely got more risky to go fast on the road. I'm not saying a 1198 isn't quick, but the grunt appeals more than an extra 30 bhp now.
Yeah, that penny dropped with me about 10 years back. Track days only for me nowadays. If I go back to a road bike it wont be any of the current crop of mental fast bikes. When you say more risky on the road, are you referring to being caught speeding or heavier pesky traffic. Or both??
Neither my mates sthou or his later hp4 could live with the 1198 on corner exit. Nor could he outbreak me into the corner. On normal roads and all things equal (inc rider skill), the 1198 would piss an sthou. Obviously a better rider wouldve helped. Track would be different, then the sthou can use its advantage. Same with motorways etc. But on twisty and normal roads, the 1198 is a great bike. It leaps out of corners like a randy salmon. My old one made 170bhp and 110ft/lbs at the back wheel after CJS had frisked it. Theyre fuckers at low speed though. Heavy on wrists and it'll bbq your right calf. The grunt though, fuck me... I miss my old 1198. White ones are faster btw and the base version is just as good as the S.
Plod and traffic, plus the courts seem more likely to regard speed as dangerous driving now. Plus riding on the limit just doesn't appeal as much as it used too.
TBH I would have been very surprised if an 1198 gave me a hard time on the road. The brakes on the S1000RR are what made me buy one. The ABS was very good, and in slick mode you could take liberties with the throttle coming out of corners. Plus the extra 30 bhp would tell. I sold mine because it only really made sense when I was caning it.
Brembo M4's are awesome, theyll make ur sthou calipers feel real old. Theres no ABS. The TC is useless and the QS will eat ur gearbox. However its an awesome bike, its very ducati. Try one.
My local dealer used to sell Suzuki and Ducati, I bought my K6 1000 new from them. When I was considering a new 1198s they had, I asked them if it would be faster than my K6. All they said was that it would be different.
I have a 1098 with a chocolate gearbox and mains with more spin than Labour HQ. The 1198 is the better bike no doubt and I'd love a 1098 R which I think is the best of the lot. BUT my '97 1098S has never let me down, no problems and it's still a bloody good machine, just saying the number of bikes that spun mains is probably a VERY small percentage. As for the chocolate boxes just don't put a QS on them annd the box will be fine I'd be interested if a lot of those out there doing the scare mongering know the real figures, or are just upping the anti with hearsay
Nelly did say he had only seen 1 or 2 in his whole carrier as a Ducati Authorised Service Centre (if I remember correctly) in a similar thread last year so it must be a very small percentage but Ducati did upgrade the bearings from the 1098 SF and 1198's
I can confirm that a 1098R will out-drag a Panigale in a straight line when they are both geared for the same top speed. It wins the torque battle on the track.
You're right about the low speed bit, although wasn't yours better after CSJ had tweaked it? Funny, it isn't my wrists that suffer, it's my neck!
Your right there's a reason for the "Old" in my name and the Senior in my title 2007 and I'm still back in the 20th century I'm not arguing Mine is best, the bike had a weakness and Ducati sorted it and undoubtly as time went on the model became better and more robust. All I was trying to get across was that contrary to what I always see on here the bike is not made of glass nor does it need a bomb disposal team to be present when starting. I'll get ma coat, I'm away for a glass of spilt milk and a plate of sour grapes (in the huff)
