Recommend Me Some Decent Ear Plugs...

  1. Those look similar to the ones I’ve ordered, not much info on the link regarding dB rating of these plugs?

I’ve read all the posts above about plugs that allow you to still listen to music or sat nav, not interested in any of that, although I do have a Bluetooth unit in my helmet for Garmin, when I hear the very muffled voice trying to speak to me, it just reminds me to look at the sat nav!

I’m purely trying to block out as much noise as possible and that’s why I think the foam plugs are still the best option for me.
I’ll let you know how I get on with the new ones when they turn up.

  2. I had a pair of expensive moulded headphones - they were amazing. Blocked noise out and crystal clear audio via my Sena. I trod on them :(

Replaced them with a pair of cheap 'Plugfones' and very happy with them.

  3. They block wind noise well but I can still hear my sena, plus they are all day comfortable I have been using for about 7 years

  4. Plugphones?

  5. I've tried this path as well by using these and a pair of small headphones. I could hear my music perfectly with great quality sound and got some noise reduction (not as much as the foam ones give me), however, they became painful after 1 1/2 hours of riding and eventually had to ditch them. Do you have any suggestion for custom moulded ones?

  6. I’ve seen those before, would prefer BT so I can connect satnav too. Wonder if you can get a BT box to connect them too?

  7. I connect these to a sena which then connect to my sat nav and phone via Bluetooth (as well as providing me with an Intercom on the very very rare occasion I ride with others who have intercom). Soon as you connect headphones to the sockets on the sena it uses them rather than the speakers you install in your helmet.

  8. I seem to remember the highest available SNR for foam plugs is 39. I tried some once but then I could hear the blood moving in my veins. Didn't like it. YMMV.

  9. Just ordered myself a pair of these to try out. At that price, be rude not to.

  10. My thoughts exactly - and they surprised me by being good! No more super expensive moulded plugs for me.

  11. I use the flare pros , cuts out wind noise and give me Bluetooth, just shove the mic piece into the front of the helmet and good to go. With some strange facial expressions I can push the middle button to answer call or start stop music or get Siri to make a call. They don’t have a noise reduction rating but seem to do a pretty good job.

  12. Right....

Just had a good hoon out on the bike today and had chance to try out the new ear plugs, the 3M 1100s

Definite improvement on the Howard Leight Max ones, the 3Ms are easier to insert cos they stay rolled up like they’re supposed to and the foam itself is a bit stiffer than the others and as we all know, it’s far easier to insert a “stiffie” ..fnar..fnarr ;)!!

A lot of it’s down to technique, getting them straight down your ear canal without bending, I’m sure my ear canals have got smaller over the years, a sort of natural defence evolution to years of nagging from the Wife, .....my body’s trying to protect me from countless years of ear bashing’s by closing up my ear canals :D:D!!

Anyhow, I’m classing today’s ride as a success for the new plugs and it helps a lot if you take your time to insert them properly and hold them while they swell up again :upyeah:

  13. I have an old BT set laying around somewhere, that would work. I was clearly overthinking it. Thanks :upyeah:

  14. I see that, my thing is that I can fit these well and others I sruggle with

  15. Max attenuation earplugs are the only way to go.... or as I’ve done, bought the ACS Communicator custom fit earplugs/speaker.

When I had my fitting with Mr ACS he told me that if you don’t use high attenuation plugs (25db or more) you WILL be permanently damaging your hearing at anything over 50mph due to wind noise.

Even worse is to use Sena speakers inside your helmet... you have to make them louder than the noise to hear them!

I have Sena/ACS Communicator combo and I love it... ok the bike sounds a bit different but I no longer get the ringing in my ears, but I accept that some out there are too macho to have any ear protection... they’ll just have the TV on full volume when they’re older!

  16. I've tested a lot of the foam ones. The best I found was the E-A-R FX (a 3M brand) It has the highest SNR rating I have seen of 39. It is a little better than the 3M 1100, which was my previously favoured ear plug.
