1198 Starting Issue

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Graeme1198sp, Aug 6, 2019.

  1. Hi guys,

Had an 1198sp from new and never had any issues with it until last week.

    Symptoms:
The bike turns over then stops with a bit of a clunk and a wiz, was firing after a few attempts.
When the bikes running she’s absolutely fine.

Now the bike only starts once in a while, it will literally turn over and just smell like fuel. With a few puffs of which I assume is unburied fuel.

I have an error code for the CPS on my reader, so I decided I’d pop to my local Ducati and replace the part.

New part in cleared the faults.

Bike started, warmed up to temp. Turned it off and now it won’t start again and the CPS error is back again.

Battery is 4 months old, checked all my earths, new CPS, TPS reset.

Bike has 11500 miles on it, Slip on Termis with appropriate air and ECU map.

Anyone had this issue before and know of something I could be missing?

    Thanks in advance

    Graeme

  2. Is the gap correct?

Clunking etc could be sprag clutch

  3. thanks for the reply, clunking seemed to be the sprag.

Errrr the gap you say, I didn’t actually check the gap.... just one for one the sensor.
Have I done half a job?

  4. Yes the air gap for the cps.

  5. Check the cps connector. If you have replaced it, the connector on the loom side could be us.

Also, the wires for the cps at the ecu

  6. How would one check the gap?

I’ll go over the connectors and have a good check of those.

  7. Iirc, according to Derek, there is a port in front of the cps you can just get a feeler gauge in
However, if the new and old cps dimensions match perfectly, you should be fine.

  8. The part was genuine replacement part, the dimensions were exactly the same.
It’s just a newer version of the original I was told. So just plug and play.

  9. You’d think it should be fine then...

  10. On the starting issue ,I had a similar problem with my 1198S ,try a set of upgraded starter cables from @Exige ,they did the trick for me....not sure about the error codes .

  11. Cheers I’ll have a look into that, failing that I’ll push it to the Ducati dealership haha!

  12. Best to sort out the issue first before covering it up with an alternative fix to cover the real problem.

    Although @Exige cables are lovely

  13. Yes, clearly an underlying issue here to resolve, my cables will just allow it to crank faster than the standard ones do :):upyeah:

  14. So I’ve checked all my cables visually, can’t see any damage.

Going to try to find a wiring diagram to do some continuity testing to check the wires.

I’ve left her on charge over night.

I’ll go and have a chat with the Ducati tech down my way and see If he’s had any experience with the problem.

If I get a fix I’ll let everyone know just Incase anyone gets a similar issue in the future.

  15. I have seen repeated crank shaft sensor codes on some car models (after sensor replacement)
It can be sometimes down to cranking speed and battery residual voltage under cranking .If crank sensor is ac inductive ,signal amplitude can go under desired flagging crank shaft sensor .
Hook up a set of jump leads from a car battery and see if it helps with the starting ...if it does help suspect battery or resistance in heavy cables

  16. Great I’ll leave her on charge over night so the battery’s had a good charge. If it doesn’t fire I’ve got a bike booster I’ll give that a go.
    Thanks for the advice.

  17. When you say ‘booster ‘ is this one of these starter pack things ?
Does it gave a good 200 /300 amps behind it ?
That’s why I say use a car battery it will have that ,some if these jumper pack things would struggle to turn over a playing card .

  18. To be honest I’ve not really used it, I’ll check it tomorrow and if not I’ll try it off the car batt :)
