clutch is gone

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by PP1098, Apr 2, 2013.

  1. 1199ABS with 3200kms on clock and clutch is gone. No leakage either down at the slave cylinder or upper clutch fluid reservoir. No resistance whatsoever and gears refuse to change. Clutch dragging while sitting at traffic lights. Havent bled the system yet- a bit strange for a new bike with low mileage to need bleeding.
Anyone else had this problem? Well both my 916 and 1098 had similar issues but both had slave cylinders leaking and clutch fluid turning black in a short period of time. Not the case with the 1199 though..
    Thanks
    P.

  2. Is it the same/similar wet clutch to the 848?
Remove slave and grease tip of push rod, put slave back on.
Worked on my old 848 when mine jammed up!

  3. Is this not a case for the dealer putting it right under warranty?

  4. If the clutch is dragging there's air in the system, clutch fluid changing colour is down to the slave seals so maybe the Panigale has better seals?

can you change gear but there's no drive... Just revs? Or can't you get the bike in gear... Which goes back to my first point.

  5. Unless its a half hr fix in the garage, simple job, far less hassle

  6. when you say no resistance - if you pump lever rapidly a dozen times does this change? it's possible that a quick bleed at the slave will restore things but I would clear this with dealer you purchased it from before proceeding. No fluid necessarily 'leaves' the system when effective fluid transfer halts. Several freak or extreme conditions can sometimes result in a cup seal 'pass' by the fluid instead of expanding instantly as it should (like a parachute opening). It's possible low initial temperature could be the culprit here - i'm assuming that you have been starting in gear and things have improved when warmed up?

  7. Thanks for replies.
Bike is going to the dealer soon yes. Just trying to figure out what happened as they ll bleed the system and probably have the same issue again (assuming its a manufacturing fault-slave cylinder).
I did pump the lever repeatedly but no luck. Lever is travelling almost freely back and forth. Things are not improving when warmed up on the contrary its slightly bettter when cold and then deteriorates. I can't get any gear change especially from 1st to N or even 2nd to N. When at speed things are a little better (changing gears) but I can feel the plates/ discs rubbing to each other.
I read on a US forum from a couple of owners sth about the piston inside the slave cylinder -it is bigger than it should be (?!) so it rubs on the inside walls of the cylinder thus not actuating the push rod effectively. Not sure if this makes sense..
Anyway thanks for info I ll wait for the dealer to see whats what

  8. Would be interested to see what the dealer did to resolve this as I have similar issue yesterday whereby the clutch lever became extremely hard to pull in during traffic, It felt creaky and notchy like the piston was sticking or something.

Bike is at dealer at moment so will wait and see - doesnt happen when cold though

  9. Dealer just bled the system. Clutch is fine. For now. Again oil leaking at the bottom underneath horizontal cylinder. The first time they said it could be the gasket then the oil seals/ rings at the oil filter and now no clue where the oil is coming from. Not a lot just traces but very annoying.

  10. thanks for link to Panigale thread kwack - definitely one to watch..

  11. Just bought a 1199s, had this problem with my 848. Clutch lever would go all loose once the bike had warmed up, could be very dangerous as you dont get any indication when the clutch is going to bite again like I found out.
Hope the 1199s does not have the same issue, mind you my dealer sorted it out under warranty had no problems after.

  12. Am I wrong in imagining that every Pani is still under warranty? Do not touch or tinker with it... let the dealer fix it. It will be very interesting to find out their fix though... I for one would welcome your input after it is done, to find out the issue in the first place. I'm sure nobody looks out for failure, but when things do go wrong, it is forums like this which lets us all become more aware of our chosen product's foibles and weaknesses, better to deal with things if we too get the same misfortune.
