Define "defend". Two ways. 1. When you start persecuting your own citizens in an attempt to drive them from their own country. 2. When you start persecuting another country's citizens in attempt to acquire their country. There may be others.
The Eu kind of has its own government, a group of nations cooperating wouldn’t need that. Not sure about the second bit, you’re probably right though.

a group of nations with our history in a shrinking world does in my view need some form of Gov legitimized by a popular vote. dont just assume that i am probably right btw. it could just as easy be snake oil.
Maybe some form of government, without looking I couldn’t say but why does the Eu need so many politicians. It could be, I don’t think any country wants to lose its identity though.
