Love them or hate them ? I work on self scan and just wanted to know your thoughts on them. Apart from getting rid of them what would you like to see different with them if any. Since being back at work it's been a great boost for me watching regulars getting to grips with them and actually smiling when they work.....
At first I did not like them, found it infuriating when it kept telling me to wait for the attendant, but I prefer them now I`m used to them. As long as they work of course.
love them for small quantities. I reckon I get a problem every other time on average and the attendant can definitely make a difference there. Found twice now that you can beat the machine (Tesco*) if you're in too much of a hurry :- if you successfully scan and hear a beep and drop it on the 'output counter' too quickly you could get a 'Unexpected item blah' message for your hastiness. * prob wouldn't happen on a Waitrose one eh, Jerry? http://ducatiforum.co.uk/images/icons/icon7.png
Personally, I think they're great when you show patience and get the items in the bag at the right time. Plus, it saves me from having those awkward silent exchanges with the checkout person! "Morning, do you want some bags?" "No thanks." *Cue 3 mins of silence bar the random scanner beeps.*
Love them. Now there is one or two things. Some machines have those great trays where you just empty all your change from the wallet and it counts it for you super. Some machines you have to put a coin at a time I hate it and those need to be burned. Honestly scene with baseball bat from the office comes to mind. Add contactless payment chip, scan your chew gum, touch your mobile/CC and go. Second you start doing your stuff, have some items on the tray and all is fine. You scan another item and put it on out tray to get message unexpected item (as one was to fast). Till should be smart enough to sense when I lift item in question. As it is gone off the scale weight should be back to ok prior to scanning item in question. Till should unlock and ask you to put last scanned item back. Then if all ok you continue so no need for attendant Third find a way for me to buy beer with no approval needed. I am happy to have a RFID chip implanted like dogs.
Lucaz, would it not be easier to take it all to a person And Chris, what is this 'Tesco' of which you speak? I thought they were only up north?
Absolutely hate and despise them and avoid them like the plague.... invariably they dont work, or insist on calling an assistant. Id much rather deal with a human being and exchange a pleasantry with them.
Luca lol you are funny Yes your easy way through is assistant dependant I like to get to you before you have a problem. Seems your are aware it's weight led this has to be so people can't easy put a wrong item through As for stealing the attendant has to be vigilant at all times. I have been on the end of abuse from them but they pay up. I'm constantly interacting with the customer so they have someone to talk to like the checkout I welcome them and say goodbye I have noticed a lot of men use self checkout and older people like them too as they can take their time.
Luca approval is always needed at the checkout you don't hear it because it flags up to check if needed to the cashier. Obviously on self scan you can't approve yourself as it would be open to underage people being able to get alcohol so it calls an attendant this can be verified at the end in our store enabling you to carry on scanning
If I had RFID tag in my hand saying I am 18 it would not. Come to think of that same tag could be used for so much more, if I am drunk and unaware they can scan me, stamp me and drop me off at nearest bed, hotel buildings would know who you are and what you like (assuming you go there often) and so on. Starting your new multistrada ....
I find them quite usefull for getting rid of all the spare change I have at home. Recently I went to my local Tesco and spent 14 quid in 20 pence pieces!!! Rather like being in Las Vagas playing the slots! I also have a stash of 1p, 2p 5p and 10p coins so when I have an hour to spare and some shopping to do I will do the same. Get some strange looks from the security people when they see me feeding the machine for longer than a few minutes, and no doubt I am on video as a possible criminal, but I dont care!
Yes it will be but there will always be checkouts because it's about choice Though major cities I could see being all self scan with a couple of attendants
