748 Intermittent Misfire

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Pfk, Aug 30, 2019.

  1. Hi Guys,

Wonder if anyone has experienced this and can point me in the right direction to diagnose.

Haven’t had my 748 very long (3months), however I’ve done appx 350 trouble free miles.

Today it started misfiring and lost power intermittently like it had run out of fuel, then coughed and spluttered and was ok again, also when your giving it beans at around 8k it coughs and loses power, feels like a rev limiter just cut in and stopped the fuel.

Rode it back home (15 miles) and it only coughed once and power was ok

Was thinking initially coils, then maybe spark plug, fuel filter etc etc.

Would value anyone’s input on this.

    Many thanks

  2. I'd change both relays under the seat first mate.

  3. as above, it's an easy one to rule relay out plus fuel filter (how long since last replacement?) plus perforated high pressure fuel hoses within tank. Last one most likely out of two going by symptoms.

  4. Cheers guys, @cookster @Chris

She’s done 17k and has a very good history which I’ve just checked through the wad of receipts, no evidence of a new fuel filter or any relays being changed though !

Looks like a trip to Pro Twins to let Peter empty my wallet on the cards tomorrow then......

Must try and resist the shiny things that will no doubt be on offer though

  8. They've just sold a 749R as well which looked the part for a naughty weekend down a country road:upyeah:

  9. Was also advised to check the multi plug behind the front of the tank which goes to a sensor, as apparently moisture can get in behind the rubber boot.
Also to check the ecu plug, make sure the chip is sitting correctly and the fuel pump plug as well.

When I get a spare 5 will start investigating :D

  11. FCFBFB0E-EBDA-4480-B5B5-A15F3711D38F.jpeg Update.

Removed the old fuel filter today.

Think we may have a culprit, the silt and crap which poured out was unbelievable.

Only a road test will prove the theory o_O

    Can’t be any worse surely

  12. Keep out of those cheap supermarket petrol stations at all costs:thinkingface:

  13. While you're in there, are hoses ok? - just bought a s/h low mileage 848 pump assy and hose already has visible fractures.

  14. Yes Chris, surprisingly enough they looked almost new, and the inside of the tank was really tidy as well.
Recon the filter was the original one by the state of it :)

  15. Has it made the difference though??

  16. There'll be a date stamped on the side of it, just so you can tell it's age

  17. I had this exact symptom years ago on my 748, the dealer replaced the relays and checked the fuel pump (good to keep on top of anyway) and still had issues, so eventually they swapped the ECU for another that they had lying around and left mine in the workshop with the suspicion it may be water damaged and when they re-fitted it I never had the issue again! They noted that the plug where the chips can be changed had possibly let moisture in so they re-sealed it.

Might be worth checking this also on your bike
