A post about an Austin Allegro got me thinking today. Some old British cars were rubbish back in the day, are worse now but are have gained a bit of chic over time. If you had to have one in the garage now, which would you choose? My criteria is that they had to be built in the UK, so a Ford built outside the UK is not in the poll. "None of the above, I'd rather crawl on my hands and knees on broken glass" will not be an option, you sarcastic lot. I won't include cars that are obviously coveted, like Aston Martin, Some Jaguars, Mini, DeLorean, Some MGs, Bentley or Land Rover. They have to have been a joke when on sale or had problems in their life. Cars like the Triumph Stags, TR7/8 and some old Rovers are difficult as they had some issues, but are now desirable. Nothing on this list should jump out as cool to have, even now. What a thouroughly depressing list, even I'm struggling to click a box. I've done well.
I'm happy to add more to the list, if they were obviously s**t. **I find I can't change the poll options for some reason. Oh well......
Marina 1800 tc, at least thats what I think I remember! Had an Ital van, ex gpo lol, canary yellow. Wild optimism of a mattress in the back.....
Mk II Cortina would be obviously cool now, and you could justify it in your mind as being a Lotus Cortina. These have to be blatantly rubbish. Hillman Avenger is on there.
Mk2 were (are) shite and wouldn't be cool if you put the thing in a freezer, still there was a Lotus twin cam engined version so I'll give you that. Theres always the appaling MK3!
My first car was a 1976 Hillman Avenger 1500 Super, there was nothing super about it, one of my mates painted an SC before the name badges on it. I also had 3 Hillman Imps, all at once, 2 to keep the other one going, I overhauled the engine with a hot cam grind, twin carbs, extractors and modified ignition curve, got it up to 110mph. Did my Mechanical Apprenticeship at a Hillman/Chrysler/Valiant/Mitsubishi dealership.
I'd love one of these in the garage, therefore it can't be in the poll. ....and one of these wouldn't be too offensive either
None of the above thanks very much,i did buy a old rover 2000 whilst my MK1 golf (first car)was being repaired but never used it on the road. Cars from that period just don't cut the mustard like the 1980's cars did.
