Boris and his mates don't want and never did want " leave with a deal" or else they would have gone straight to the EU some 5 weeks ago and started the negotiation. So in my opinion it's all a sham. If they did manage any new deal/ amendment to the backstop it will require extra time beyond the October 31st to agree and make it legally binding... and he has pledged to leave on that date "even if we were days away from a deal" So... it's no deal Brexit, like it or not from the current Tory administration.
Did they have a choice? They negotiated a deal with the Uk - end of story.....the UK went in thinking they need us more than we need them and we will get a special (unrealistic) deal, but the EU don't want that as it makes leaving look attractive. Even a no deal brexit means ..... we continue negotiating.

The eu commission and the British government agreed on a draft proposal to put to, on the eu side, the other 27 countries and on the U.K. side, the houses of parliament. Until that draft proposal was agreed by all parties, it remained a draft proposal and certainly not an agreement. So far, the house of commons have refused that draft proposal 3 times. The numbers are the numbers, they take more cash from us than we do from them but an agreement was always the first choice. However after 3 years it's clear the only choice parliament will accept is to cancel brexit, therefore ignoring the peoples majority democratic votes when it suits them. No, I am showing you that you canada plus plus without knowing what the eu wanted from the canada deal is a poor argument. They wanted to continue the free movement of people, it would have also meant accepting eu laws and standards without having any input or say in them. More importantly, canada plus only refers to mainland U.K. and not Northern Ireland so would split the U.K. and keep Northern Ireland in the customs union.
