998 / 748 Wiring loom

  1. Hi there,

As I am about to start rebuilding my 998S (after a cash absorbing restoration) I am unsure as to whether to repair or replace the wiring harness.

The original harness had an alarm cut out of it but the repairs made to the loom look suspect and as reliability is a key requirement I have searched in vein for a replacement loom (totally different to the 996 loom).

I have been offered a 748 loom but unsure if it is a direct replacement, I have also spoken to a few companies specialising in electrical repairs but do not want to look at the loom off the bike.

So if anyone can confirm interchangeability of the 748 / 998 looms or mail me a 748 wiring diagram I would be most grateful.

Also if anyone can recommend someone professional who would look at making good my existing loom I would be most grateful.

    Thanks all

    Phil

  2. I dont think a 748 loom will be any use to you, they have different ECU's for a start.

  3. I was afraid that would be the case ;o(((

    Many thanks

    Phil

  4. Nope. The 998 uses a complete loom for chassis and injection. Earlier bikes ran seperate looms with connections between the two.
How bad is the damage? Depends on how you want the job to finish up....factory fresh or taped up loom. A new one is about £670..

  5. is the 996 the same as a 998?.....

  6. No, it's more akin to the 748

  7. yup,just reread fugly's first post.

  8. 748 wiring diagram.

  9. Hi guys,

Thanks for all your replies, it looks like the 998 is a bespoke loom so will keep searching for a good replacement and try to repair mine at as an interim solution.

Not looking for an immaculate original loom, just something that doesn't niggle in the back of my brain as to whether it will let me down.

Out with the cutters, multi-meter and heat shrink ,o)

  10. Personally I'd repair what you've got rather than get a second-hand loom that may be no better or even worse. Unless yours is completely knacked then the chances are a few minor repairs/alterations and it'll be perfect. Otherwise fit new but that's a major expense.

  11. Fugly the looms are different, also the 996 and 99 on 748 have different looms to the 916 and pre 99 748 ones. There are parts of the looms which can be used but these are the peripheral bits and they need to be checked first. For example the LH switch cluster and headlight looms are the same on 998s and later 748s but the RH switches on the 998 has different colour coding on the main loom to the switch connector plug (the switches are still interchangeable however). However the main loom and the ecu loom are different between early and late 748s and again different to the 998, they all use different pin connections at the main front to rear connector and are not interchangeable.
If you are repairing a loom due to having an alarm removed it is quite an easy job but you need to solder and heat shrink the connections to do it properly. If the alarm was a Meta I can send you details of how it is supposed to be wired in so you can see which cables have been cut although the precise wire cut location is down to the installer. I can send you a copy of the late model 748 (including the ecu part) and the 998 diagrams with the component number keys if you need them. Send me a pm, I will need to email them as the format and size is too big for a pm.

  12. Hi. As you've already heard the looms aren't interchangeable. I could probably help though, i'm an electronic engineer. I've also made looms from scratch to convert a crosser to an enduro, removed a datatool from my 748 miles from home when it went mad and refused to let the bike start, and have no problems making an mods or wiring to my SPS track bike.
If you're not afraid of having a go i'd say repair don't replace. Might take some time to get a factory look, and can mean extra work than just repairing what you wanted. But can get a good finish and saves £670 odd. PM me if you want a chat.

  13. Are 998 2003 harness like hens teeth ?

I can find the ECU , engine but zero luck with the 998 loom

  14. yep

  15. That makes sense , 998 engine is out then

  16. why....

  17. No wiring loom to hook up the 998 ecu ., 2 phase/3 phase alternator ..

  18. so how are you going to make a 999 engine work then?

  19. You can get 999 engine looms

  20. my point is the 998 engine is the same as the base 999 so if you had a 998 engine you could run it on a 999 loom in fact you could run a 1098 a 1198 uncle tom cobble n all
I thought you had sorted where you are going with this?
