1098r dilema

  1. Hi there,

I just sold my 999s this week and was thinking about a Multistrada but I have not got the superbike bug out of my system yet. I went to look at a 1098r this morning (2009) with 6k kilometers on the clock. It had been used for track days and while it was never dropped, there were signs of stone chips and very enjoyed tyres etc. I took a test run and it was fantastic/unbelievable etc.

However, I was concerned about something I have never experienced on any other Ducati before....Going up the gear box from 1st was 100% slick but coming down (and I only got to enjoy 1st -3rd) there was a clicking sensation at the clutch lever. I cannot recall if it was as I pulled in the lever or as I went down the box on the foot peg but I think it was as I pulled in the lever - Just one click and only going down the gears - not up!. It was not doing it on stand still after the test run, just as it was driving. Can anyone explain what this is as it is perplexing me. Has this something to do with the sliper clutch or what?

The current owner wants big money (but average for UK prices for the bike) and I am concerned that with such an investment, I might be buying a big problem.

    Any advice gratefully received.

    Many thanks

  2. Sounds like the usual kickback through the lever from the slipper clutch!

  3. Many thanks and you will have to excuse my ignorance of the 'new technology'. Do you know what process is happening to make that happen or suggest where I can find out more information on this and how to use a slipper clutch 'properly'!

  4. Yep slipper, I had the same concerns the first time out with my slipper.

  5. Although...early 1098R gearboxes were made of chocolate

  6. I get the same kick back through my slipper on the 999r

  7. Slipper doodle doo

  8. Click through the lever as the clutch engages and slips... Nothing to see here, move along.

  9. Aye, slipper. Feels like a wierd pulse feedback upon release of clutch lever. I think they sorted the marzipan trannys after 2008 on the 1098R. Mines got the Bayliss one and its frightfully groovy. So there.

  10. Many thanks everybody for the reassuring advice. I feel a lot happier now!!

Can you answer 2 question re the 'chocolate gear box' issue? What was the problem and when in 2009 was the fix?

The bike I am looking at is 2009 registered although I will need to find out exactly when in 2009.

    Many thanks again

    Rgds
